Req ID: 387047
We are currently seeking a Principal Commerce Layer Architect - REMOTE to join our team in Dallas, Texas (US-TX), United States (US).
We are seeking an enterprise-level Principal Commerce Layer Architect to own, design, and govern the technical blueprint of our global digital commerce ecosystem. In this high-seniority role, you will be the core technical authority responsible for transitioning legacy architectures into a highly decoupled, API-first, composable infrastructure powered by CommerceLayer.
You will orchestrate the intersection of high-scale checkout operations, globally distributed inventory pools, complex multi-market pricing engines, and enterprise data flows. Working directly with executive stakeholders, engineering managers, and cross-functional product teams, you will establish the integration patterns, performance benchmarks, and governance standards that safeguard our global transaction layers.
Key Performance ResponsibilitiesEnterprise Architecture, Design & Discovery- Author and maintain comprehensive architectural blueprints, sequence diagrams, and data-flow mappings detailing how CommerceLayer communicates with external PIM, ERP, and OMS infrastructure.
- Design robust structural guardrails, caching strategies, and edge computation models to maximize API efficiency and ensure low-latency storefront interactions globally.
- Resolve highly complex engineering bottlenecks, structural performance regressions, and multi-region synchronization failures across the composable layer.
System Scalability, Stability & Co-existence Governance- Define and audit end-to-end security parameters across the transaction pipeline, including encryption of sensitive customer records, API access token lifecycle management, and verification of webhook signatures.
- Establish architectural strategies for phase-based rollouts, allowing localized markets to go live independently on CommerceLayer while legacy commerce properties gracefully deprecate.
- Formulate robust automated load-testing and regression strategies to guarantee that core ordering pathways remain unbroken during massive seasonal traffic surges.
Technical Governance & Cross-Functional Collaboration- Lead complex architectural discovery workshops, technical steering committees, and system-readiness evaluations to align data, frontend, infrastructure, and QA teams.
- Provide high-fidelity engineering complexity assessments, technical risk logs, and resource forecasting matrices for the long-term technology roadmap.
- Maintain elite developer documentation, tracking system interface contracts, integration fallback procedures, and emergency infrastructure runbooks.
Dedicated Commerce Layer Architectural Experience BreakdownTo ensure absolute structural stability, sub-second global API performance, and seamless system interoperability, candidates must meet the exact technical experience parameters defined across the following core architectural domains of the CommerceLayer Platform:
1. Composable Commercelayer Schema & Core Resource Modeling- Focus Areas: Designing enterprise-grade data schemas utilizing the CommerceLayer JSON:API specification; establishing relationships between core primitives (Markets, Promotion Rules, Stock Locations, Shipping Methods, SKUs, and Price Lists); and structuring multi-tenant or multi-organization workspaces to support localized international brand portfolios.
2. Multi-Market Inventory & Global Supply Chain Routing Architecture- Focus Areas: Engineering real-time inventory allocation logic using CommerceLayer Inventory Pools and Stock Locations; designing fallback rules for distributed warehouse systems; and syncing high-velocity stock updates from external ERP/WMS nodes without triggering API rate limits or processing bottlenecks.
3. Enterprise Cart, Multi-Currency Pricing & Secure Checkout Flows- Focus Areas: Architecting localized pricing matrix architectures across hundreds of distinct localized markets; orchestrating PCI-compliant checkout flows; integrating headless payment gateways (Stripe, Adyen); and binding real-time tax calculation engines (Avalara, TaxJar) securely into the CommerceLayer Order model.
4. Event-Driven Webhooks, Subscriptions & Async Integration Patterns- Focus Areas: Designing event-driven decoupled systems using CommerceLayer Webhooks and Circuit Breakers; building scalable middleware to handle high-concurrency order status updates; and implementing reliable asynchronous messaging patterns to pipe structured order data into downstream ERP, CRM, and fulfillment networks.
5. Frontend Decoupling, Edge Delivery & Identity Architecture- Focus Areas: Directing front-to-back connectivity between headless UI layers (Next.js, Nuxt) and CommerceLayer JavaScript SDKs; implementing secure Customer Single Sign-On (SSO) systems; and managing global OAuth token generation strategies at the edge to ensure blazing-fast web vitals and zero-friction purchase journeys.
Skills & Qualifications- 1+ Years of CommerceLayer
- 8+ years of eCommerce experience, technical software engineering and architecture experience, specializing in web environments, composable architectures, and modern digital commerce solutions at massive global scale.
- 5+ years mastery of TypeScript/JavaScript, REST APIs, GraphQL, JSON:API specifications, SQL/NoSQL databases, Node.js, and serverless compute platforms (AWS Lambda, Vercel, or Google Cloud Functions).
- 5+ yearsexperience with advanced API modeling utilities, microservice orchestration tools, CI/CD automated deployment runners (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI), performance tracking metrics, Jira, and Git workflows.
Preferred Skills:- Next.js and CommerceLayer JavaScript SDKs; implementing secure Customer Single Sign-On (SSO) systems; and managing global OAuth token generation strategies at the edge to ensure blazing-fast web vitals and zero-friction purchase journeys.
- Experience directing high-impact technical architecture decisions and governance frameworks for globally distributed product development groups.
- Elite communication and narrative-building capabilities, with a verified track record of articulating complex technical risk factors, data schemas, or API trade-offs to non-technical business partners and C-suite stakeholders.
Educational Background- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or an equivalent engineering discipline.
