Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Vancouver, BC

Compensation: CA$105,000 - CA$130,000 / year

Description

Square One is looking for an experienced Pricing Actuary to join our data science team. If you have solid personal auto pricing experience, strong statistical modelling skills, and want real ownership over a portfolio you're helping build from the ground up, we'd love to hear from you.

Your Role

Your primary focus will be British Columbia auto insurance, a new product for us. This is foundational work: you'll help establish how we price it and stay closely involved as it develops. You'll also contribute across our established books - home insurance and our Ontario and Quebec auto products - through portfolio analysis, performance monitoring, and close work with our underwriting partners. You'll see the breadth of our business across several distinct portfolios.

Your Responsibilities

As a key contributor to the pricing of our auto and home insurance products, your responsibilities will include:
  • Rate Development: Build rating models and rate level indications for BC auto, working from industry and benchmark data at the outset and incorporating our own experience as the book develops.
  • Statistical Modelling: Develop, test, and validate predictive models for risk classification, loss cost, and portfolio performance.
  • Regulatory Filings: Prepare and support rate filings and respond to regulator questions with clear, well-documented actuarial support.
  • Portfolio Monitoring: Track loss experience, rate adequacy, and mix, identify emerging trends early, and recommend action.
  • Business Partnership: Work with product, underwriting, sales, and claims to translate pricing insight into decisions, and present findings clearly to stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.

Your Qualifications

You want to contribute to the company's success by becoming an expert in your role, directing your work confidently, and collaborating with a team that values purpose over profit alone. You are someone who:
  • Has a natural curiosity and enjoys learning.
  • Possesses strong analytical skills and sound actuarial judgment.
  • Can build from scratch and make decisions without a template to follow.
  • Uses creativity and resourcefulness to solve problems.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, including with non-technical audiences.
  • Is detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Values constructive feedback and continuous improvement.

Your Education + ExperienceYour background will help ensure your success at Square One. Candidates with equivalent skills or the ability to learn tools quickly will also be considered.
  • You have your ACAS designation.
  • You have a minimum of 3 years of actuarial experience.
  • You have hands-on experience pricing personal (private passenger) automobile insurance.
  • You have strong programming skills, preferably in R, or in a comparable language.
  • You are proficient with Excel.
  • You have strong statistical modelling experience.
  • Experience with British Columbia auto insurance is a strong asset.
  • Experience preparing or supporting regulatory rate filings is valued.
  • Experience with SQL is beneficial.

Your Compensation + Benefits

You appreciate the fact that Square One personalizes your compensation and benefits in the same way it personalizes policies for its customers. Your competitive compensation and benefits plan includes:
  • An annual salary of $105,000 to $130,000.
  • 3-weeks, not 2-weeks, of vacation to start and an additional week after 3 years.
  • Flexible medical, dental, vision, and extended health care coverage.
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • In-house and external training paid by Square One, including actuarial exam progress.
  • Work setup can be in-person, hybrid, or remote.
  • You also participate in Square One's employee profit share and performance bonus programs. Under these programs, when the company achieves its annual targets, you share in its profits.
