Overview

Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Director of PT has the responsibility for overall direction, utilization, supervision, instruction, and evaluation of professional and supportive staff, volunteer and students utilized in the PT department. Also, he/she is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of all patient care programs, plans for providing care, performance improvement programs, polices and procedures, maintaining adequate qualified and competent personnel, adequate space and equipment to ensure a high degree of quality patient care. The director will also ensure effective integration of the facility and operations plan that compliment the organization's plans for continuous performance improvement and the delivery of quality patient care.

Position Responsibilities/Standards:

General
  • Attend department, clinic or company meetings as required
  • Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns
  • Consistently work in a positive and cooperative manner with fellow staff members.
  • Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary.
  • Attend required annual in-service programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all company policies and procedures including delegation of authority as outlined in the Indiana Code IC 25-27-1-13.
  • Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Identifies potentially unsafe situations and notifies supervisor.

Supervision of Facility Activities
  • Scheduling patients for treatment and evaluation
  • Preparation of reports and records by personnel
  • Use of volunteer who may assist the facility
  • Staff and student physical therapist/ physical therapist assistant training program.
  • Responsible for the evaluation of all patients referred for physical therapy
  • Responsible for completion and submission of all reports pertaining to the evaluation.
  • Must see that all referral sources are advised of facility action with the case referred

Treatment
  • Must practice PT consistent with the American Physical Therapy Association Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice and company's standards of practice and procedure.
  • Must maintain a patient treatment schedule consistent with the needs of the facility
  • Must confer with the person(s) most closely associated with the active management of the patient and to keep them informed of any additional patient needs, treatment modification, and/or progress.
  • Must treat patients as a staff PT when necessary.
  • Must treat patients of all ages (0-120 years of age), creed, race, gender and disability without bias or prejudice.
  • Must respect and understand the patient's right to treatment and right to involvement with treatment decisions.
  • Must practice ethical responsibility based on the cultural, ethnic and religious beliefs of the patients served and applicable law.

Records and Reports
  • Responsible for the preparation and submission of reports, assuring confidentiality of all records including:
    • Evaluation reports/summaries
    • Discharge reports/summaries
    • Progress reports to referring physicians and agencies
    • Current progress notes on all patients
    • Special reports requested by the administrator
    • Daily attendance records/ summaries.

Meetings and Conferences
  • Must attend company quarterly meetings
  • Must hold regular facility meetings to
    • Report on and discuss activities and needs of the facility.
    • Discuss patient's needs and progress.
    • Discuss reports and records
    • Discuss expansion in terms of future goals and needs.
    • To see that all routines and procedures are carried out as outlined.

Professional Status and Public Relations
  • Must keep abreast of new techniques and trends in the field of physical therapy
  • Must attend conventions, meetings or special courses whenever possible and must share with personnel information gained thereby.
  • To prepare and give talks to community groups as requested.
  • To maintain good public relations with all community sources.

Performance Requirements
  • Must delegate portions of the above duties to personnel in line with the best use of time and experience of such personnel.
  • Must assist with recruitment of applicants for positions
  • Must orient new personnel to the program and procedures.
  • Must evaluate and report at regular intervals, the work of other employees, student, or volunteers at the facility.
  • Must plan for future improvement in procedures and organization of the company/facility.
  • Must actively participate and adhere to all policies and procedures as enumerated in the risk management program.
  • Must review any procedures with facility personnel as necessary.
  • Responsible for interpreting and carrying out the prescription of the physician.
  • Responsible for maintaining good public relations.
  • Responsible for protection of confidential data
  • Responsible for economic use of time, equipment, and supplies.
  • Responsible for safety and welfare of patients and employees.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Required:
  • Must be a graduate of approve PT school
  • Must have a Masters of Science degree from an approved PT school with at least 2 years of department/facility experience, at least 1 year of which was supervisory OR must have a bachelor of science degree with a minimum of 5 years of department/facility experience, at least 2 years of which were supervisory and the knowledge and skills associated with a masters degree.
  • Must have or be eligible for, the State Licensure of Registration. Registration must be obtained within one year, or per state law.
  • Must have good physical stamina - must be fairly strong, energetic, must be able to walk, stand, stoop, and lift etc to perform job duties.
  • Must know the principles and practice of PT, be familiar with the APTA Code of Ethics, company polices, procedures and regulations, layout of the facility, inter and intra facility communications, supervision and management techniques.
  • Must be able to apply the theory of PT.
  • Must have ability and competency to operate the equipment of his or her position, perform technical procedures, and speak intelligently and in a professional manner before other, supervision and management skills.
  • Must be able to instill confidence in patients, doctors and personnel.
  • Must be able to determine proper procedure and methods and evaluate results, must make decisions on his or her own.
  • Must be able to adapt to emergency situation,
  • Must be alert to changes in the patient's condition and all activities of the facility and company.
  • Must have a high degree of accuracy in carry out prescription, in receiving and translating information and in charting and reporting.
  • Must have coordination of sight and body movements in various applications of procedures; techniques of assisting and handling patients; ability to handle the tools and machines of the profession.
  • Must be a graduate of, or have a certificate from, and American Physical Therapy Association approved school of PT; or a school approved by the World Congress of PT
  • Must have current state licensure/registration
  • Must have CPR certification
  • Must have continuing or post-graduate education consistent with the scope and needs of the major patient population of the facility.

Supervising responsibility:

Responsible for making recommendations and/or decisions for hiring, corrective actions, terminations and performance evaluations.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements for the position include the ability to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and/or feel objects. Must be able to climb, pull, push and kneel. Ability to demonstrate exercises properly without limitations. Maximum unassisted lift = 50 lbs. Average lift 25-50 lbs.
