About the role The Risk Control Practice Leader is a senior technical role responsible for elevating technical excellence, coaching and mentoring Risk Control professionals, and partnering with Underwriting, Claims, and Broking partners to profitably grow and retain business. This role models the Intact Values, provides hands-on guidance, and ensures technical quality across risk assessments, recommendations, and client engagements. It blends research and development, project leadership, and technical enablement to ensure teams deliver consistent, high-value service across complex risk profiles. It also reflects elements of the Specialty Lines Practice Leader profile by supporting strategic projects, due diligence, and systems enhancements that improve reporting and decision quality. Key Responsibilities Practice Leadership and Technical Authority:
  • Serve as the technical authority for SL Risk Control (e.g., property/ casualty) to maintain consistency and depth.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and mentoring to Specialists and Senior Specialists to ensure technical quality and consistency in deliverables.
  • Stay current with technical subject matter, regulatory environments, and emerging issues; disseminate insights and best practices to the field.
Talent Development and Training:
  • Establish and lead a mentorship program to recruit, develop, and organically build the SL Risk Control (RC) team's capabilities.
  • Partner with the RC Training Specialist to ensure technical components of RC training are relevant, up to date, and aligned with field needs.
  • Support recognition of technical progression (e.g. Sr. Specialist) to acknowledge deepening expertise and impact.
Cross-Functional Partnership and Business Impact:
  • Partner with Underwriting with joint ownership to select, retain, and profitably grow a high-quality book of business.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with Underwriting, Claims, RC (Consultants, Senior Consultants, Specialists, Senior Specialists), and Brokers to serve customers as a unified team.
  • Conduct business and risk control due diligence, including regulatory and compliance research, to inform selection and service strategies.
  • Discover and evaluate customer needs through loss analysis and readiness assessments; align RC products and services to mitigate loss drivers.
Research, Development, and Systems Enablement:
  • Provide research, development, and project management support on strategic Specialty Lines and RC initiatives that advance capabilities and outcomes.
  • Assist with the planning, development, and maintenance of survey management and related software/database systems; improvements to reporting formats, and development of new applications.
Client Engagement and Delivery:
  • Complete risk assessment evaluations for highly complex accounts (high severity potential, multi-location, national/global companies).
  • Provide actionable solutions to help customers mitigate risk using the full span of RC resources; create a valued customer experience in every engagement.
  • Write technically detailed reports that clearly communicate risk assessments and articulate prioritized, feasible recommendations and expected impacts.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality assurance (QA) on completed reports by Specialists, Senior Specialists and mentored Senior Consultants to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering, Safety, Risk Management, or related field required; advanced degree and/or certifications (e.g., CSP, ARM, CFPS, P.E.) preferred.
  • Experience: 8-12+ years in Risk Control, Safety, or Loss Prevention with increasing technical responsibility; demonstrated mentoring/coaching experience and success partnering with Underwriting to support profitable growth and retention.
  • Technical Skills: Deep subject-matter expertise relevant to the vertical/discipline (property, casualty, etc.); strong analytical skills for loss analysis and risk modeling; proficiency with survey management and reporting systems.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills; ability to translate complex technical issues into clear, prioritized recommendations and client-ready reports.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead without formal authority, influence cross-functional stakeholders, and drive adoption of best practices.
  • For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism is required considering the necessity to interact on a regular basis with English speaking colleagues across the country.
