Full Job Description
We are seeking a skilled Power System Planning & Operations Superintendent to lead the daily management, planning, and coordination of APGI and Alcoa's high-voltage power systems and utility operations. In this role, you will oversee the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of our NERC-registered Bulk Electric System (BES), Rectifier Station, plant high-voltage distribution systems, and Long Sault/Alcoa Utilities water systems. You will play a key role in maintaining asset reliability, optimizing operational performance, supporting strategic capital investments, and ensuring regulatory compliance while leading a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

This position also provides critical support to plant operations through sound technical judgment, maintenance strategy, resource management, and data-driven decision making.

About the Role:

As the Power System Planning & Operations Superintendent, you will:
  • Lead the short-term planning, maintenance, and operation of the Bulk Electric System (BES), Rectifier Station, high-voltage plant systems, and Long Sault/Alcoa Utilities, maintaining a target of 99% equipment and operational reliability.
  • Utilize established work management systems, including Rex, to plan and schedule resources on a weekly basis, achieving an 80% planned work completion rate, week over week.
  • Develop and execute long-term, resource-loaded schedules supporting both operations and maintenance (O&M) activities as well as capital projects.
  • Create detailed job plans and technical maintenance procedures aligned with the reliability objectives of the Power Systems Department using established maintenance and operational practices.
  • Plan and coordinate work utilizing proven methods, policies, and procedures to ensure resources are deployed efficiently, minimizing delays, maximizing productivity, maintaining quality standards, and remaining within budget constraints.
  • Partner with the Power System Manager to provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of contractors, project teams, and support personnel.
  • Conduct internal audits of department standards, facilitate annual critical assessments for the Massena facility, and lead all aspects of Facility Ratings Assessments in compliance with FERC, NERC, and NPCC requirements.
  • Foster open communication and strong collaboration across hourly and salaried teams while building productive relationships with key stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Support the growth and development of junior team members through coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance.
  • Champion Alcoa's commitment to safety by supporting Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) programs and initiatives, including Behavior-Based Safety programs, audits, Safety Council activities, and Safety Advisors.


Working Conditions:

This position operates primarily within an industrial manufacturing environment and requires close collaboration across operational and leadership teams. Key aspects include:
  • Onsite work within a dynamic industrial manufacturing facility.
  • Frequent interaction with both hourly and salaried employees working a variety of shifts.
  • Regular presence in production environments may include exposure to industrial equipment, elevated noise levels, and varying temperature conditions.
  • Supporting full compliance with all safety procedures, standards, and safe-work practices.


What you can bring to the role:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working with rectifier stations and industrial plant power systems.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in power system operations and maintenance.
  • Advanced ability to read, interpret, and apply technical drawings, schematics, manuals, and documentation related to complex electrical, mechanical, and civil infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of power system safety standards and demonstrated ability to develop and deliver associated training programs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and MS Schedule/Exchange.
  • Proven ability to provide leadership, solve complex problems, achieve measurable results, and successfully manage change.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, including the ability to logically evaluate challenges, identify essential requirements, and develop practical solutions that achieve project objectives.


Required Technical Knowledge

Successful candidates will possess demonstrated knowledge and experience in:
  • Electrical safety standards, including Alcoa Electrical Safety Standards 32.60 and 32.69.
  • OSHA Electrical Regulations (1910.269).
  • Project management and outage planning/execution.
  • Operation, coordination, maintenance, and reliability requirements associated with high-voltage power delivery systems.

Base Salary: 111,800 - 167,400 USD annually

Actual salaries will vary and will be based on a range of factors, including a candidate's qualifications, skills, and competencies in conjunction with multiple components of the Employee Total Rewards Package.
