Summary

This is the senior level of the Power Engineering Technologist classification. The purpose of this position is to provide senior-level technical expertise to analyze complex options and prepare complex power distribution facility designs for residential, commercial, industrial, and large project work related to the reliability of the distribution grid. Incumbents are expected to possess advanced technical skills and extensive experience in the client's specific areas of expertise. This role represents the first level of leadership and assists with training new employees while acting as a liaison between the client and the team by providing project updates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

With minimal oversight or supervision, the incumbent is responsible for the following:
  • Direct the workflow and activities of Engineering Technologists and others as assigned by management and the client
  • Work closely with the Pike Engineering Professional Engineer (PE) in responsible charge to ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal codes, as well as client standards
  • Design the most complex electric distribution facilities and circuit construction projects across a wide geographic area, including downtown underground projects, extra-facility projects, high-profile projects, highway relocations, and other projects requiring the highest reliability
  • Prepare site drawings, construction drawings, calculations, easements, and other required documentation for complex electrical distribution installations
  • Create work requests using work management tools and communicate effectively with clients and end-use customers regarding schedules, commitments, feasibility, timelines, and expectations
  • Develop relationships with key internal and external customers, builders, developers, electricians, other utilities, and city officials as needed to support project execution
  • Coordinate with construction personnel and client or customer representatives to resolve job-site or design-related issues
  • Serve as a departmental lead by assisting with training and providing technical support to other engineering classifications
  • Support company and client business goals while representing Pike Engineering professionally and positively
  • Act as the lead or single point of contact for large infrastructure projects or programs, coordinating technicians, engineers, and field resources to meet project deliverables and objectives
  • Learn, practice, and promote all safety policies and procedures at all times
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management

Complexity of Work

Complex work where established procedures may not be available. Position involves significant decision-making responsibility.

Relationships Outside Work Group

Position influences decisions of major importance and requires a high degree of tact and diplomacy to obtain favorable outcomes and maintain goodwill.

Supervisory Responsibilities

May serve in a Team Lead or Project Manager I role.

Education
  • Required: High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Associate degree from a two-year college or technical school
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in non-engineering science, math, or business

Note: Certain client projects or contractual requirements may require an Associate or Bachelor's degree.

Experience
  • 5-7 years of experience in utility power distribution engineering or related craft work
