About the role.Reporting to the Chief Power Engineer, the
Power Engineer Relief - Third Class Power Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and reliability of the utility systems supporting the Coaldale manufacturing facility. This role provides operational relief coverage and maintenance support while ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation, company standards, and safe work practices.
This is a
6-month contract position working
Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. The successful candidate must be available to provide relief coverage for vacant operating shifts as required.
What you'll be doing. - Operate and maintain a 100,000 lb/hr high-pressure steam boiler and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Operate and maintain a 3,900 HP industrial ammonia refrigeration system.
- Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures on steam, refrigeration, compressed air, and utility systems.
- Maintain accurate operating logbooks, inspection records, and SPC data entries.
- Monitor and troubleshoot the Energy Recovery System (water-to-water heat recovery).
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on:
- High-pressure steam systems
- Industrial refrigeration equipment
- Air compressors
- Utility water systems
- Conduct routine boiler and refrigeration water chemistry testing.
- Replace air and oil filters on boiler, refrigeration, and utility equipment.
- Participate in troubleshooting equipment failures and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Work safely at heights, climb ladders, and access elevated equipment when required.
- Safely lift up to 50 lb independently and 75-80 lb with assistance.
- Perform work in confined or awkward spaces, including bending, stooping, kneeling, and crawling when servicing equipment.
- Support plant shutdowns, emergency repairs, and other maintenance activities as assigned.
- Provide operating shift coverage when vacancies occur to ensure continuous plant operation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Power Engineer or designate.
This position is based in a regulated manufacturing environment and requires strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Employees must consistently follow all GMP, safety, and hygiene requirements, including restrictions on jewelry, personal items, and attire while on the production floor. Compliance with these standards is an essential duty of the role to ensure product quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
What you'll need to be successful. - Valid Alberta Third Class Power Engineer Certificate.
- Experience operating and maintaining high-pressure steam boilers and industrial ammonia refrigeration systems is considered an asset.
- Mechanical aptitude with experience performing preventative and corrective maintenance.
- Physically capable of safely performing the duties of the position, including:
- Working at heights
- Climbing ladders
- Lifting up to 50 lb
- Bending, stooping, kneeling, and working in confined spaces
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and maintenance management systems such as SAP.
- Must be able to obtain or maintain:
- H₂S Alive
- Confined Space Entry
- Forklift Operator Certification
- Term:6-month contract
- Regular Schedule: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week
- Shift Coverage: Must be available to provide relief coverage for vacant operating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays when operationally required.

Compensation Package : - Starting at 52.48 CAD hourly + Hourly Pay Differential for applicable shifts
