Description

Position Purpose:

The Portfolio Manager is responsible for the credit quality, underwriting oversight, and ongoing portfolio management of an assigned commercial loan portfolio. This role partners with Commercial Lenders and cross-functional teams to structure and manage credit relationships while ensuring alignment with the Bank's risk appetite. The Portfolio Manager serves as a steward of portfolio performance, providing leadership in credit decisioning, risk monitoring, and may provide guidance and oversight to credit analysts and/or underwriting resources.

Primary Responsibilities:

Credit & Underwriting Oversight
  • Lead and/or oversee the underwriting process for assigned portfolio, ensuring sound credit analysis, structure, and risk alignment.
  • Review, validate, and approve credit packages for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to policy.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to underwriting and/or credit analyst resources, as applicable.
  • Ensure consistent application of credit standards across all assigned relationships.

Portfolio Management & Risk Monitoring

Maintain ongoing responsibility for credit quality and risk management of assigned loan portfolio.
• Proactively identify and manage emerging risk within the portfolio, partnering with lenders to address areas of concern and manage maturing obligations.
• Oversee loan renewals, covenant compliance, and documentation tracking to ensure timely and accurate portfolio management.
• Lead the management and remediation strategy for delinquent or deteriorating credits, coordinating with Risk and leadership as appropriate.
• Oversee tracking and resolution of documentation and financial exceptions, ensuring timely remediation by appropriate resources.
• Ensure accurate and timely portfolio reporting; analyze trends and provide insights to leadership on portfolio performance.

Relationship & Revenue Support
• Partner with Commercial Lenders, Treasury Management, and other stakeholders to structure and deliver financial solutions that drive loan growth, deposits, and fee income.
• Contribute to market production goals through effective credit execution and participation in client engagements.
• Participate in client meetings and provide subject matter expertise in structuring credit solutions.

Leadership & Process Improvement
  • Serve as a primary liaison across internal stakeholders (Credit, Operations, Risk, Compliance, etc.).

• Coordinate cross-functional credit activities to ensure consistency and efficiency in execution.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance credit processes, workflow efficiency, and policy effectiveness.
  • Support consistency and scalability in underwriting practices across the Market.
  • May coordinate workflow or assign priorities to analysts/underwriters, depending on team structure.


Authority, Impact, Risk:
• Influence portfolio credit performance through independent judgment and leadership of credit activities
• Regulatory examinations and resulting ratings.
• Mitigate credit risk with accuracy in analysis and reporting.
• Fair Lending and its applicability to consumer & commercial lending
• Contribute to local market performance through impact, influence and follow through on referrals.

Key Relationships:

Interaction with CBO, MD-CB, D-CB&CR, CRO, CCO, Market Executive, Private Bankers, Branch Supervisor, Loan Operations, Credit Analysts, Underwriting

Managerial Accountability
• May provide day-to-day direction, review, and coaching to Credit Analysts and/or Underwriters supporting the portfolio.
• Ensures quality, consistency, and timeliness of credit deliverables across supported resources.
• May participate in performance feedback, training, and development of junior credit team members.
• Responsible for prioritization of workflow and effective allocation of credit resources to meet production and service expectations.

Working Conditions:

Time Allocation:
• Credit Underwriting & Deal Support - 30%
• Portfolio Management & Risk Monitoring - 30%
• Leadership / Oversight of Analysts & Underwriters - 15-20%
• Relationship Support & Business Development - 10-15%
• Administrative / Reporting / Process Improvement - 5-10%

Job Specifications:

Position adheres to confidentiality policy, code of ethics and knowledge of Bank Secrecy Act and best practices and other pertinent Regulatory laws and regulations.

Required:
• Bachelor's degree in business, finance or related field or equivalent experience required.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in Financial Services required
• Prior working experience with loan underwriting and credit training is required.
• Ability to successfully complete system training within 90 days of hire.
• Ability to analyze financial and project statement, corporate and personal tax returns.
• Understanding of basic loan structure processes and regulations associated with lending
• Strong understanding of loan documentation criteria.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Excellent professional interpersonal, customer relations and sales skills.
• Direct experience with Relationship Management
• Appetite for Continuous Learning and self-motivated

Preferred:
• Exposure to Commercial Banking highly desired.
• Knowledge of United's services, products, policies and procedures is a plus.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills in Spanish or additional language a plus.

Acts within authorized limits and delegated authorities and role applicable policies and procedures. Follows processes and controls to protect shareholder interests. Mitigates risk to the bank and customers by following all applicable security procedures.
