Full Job Description
Overview

Electric Boat's Portable Machining team supports critical Columbia program milestones by performing precision, on-hull machining and repair operations directly on submarines and major assemblies. Our team specializes in high-accuracy field machining on exotic alloys including Inconel, Monel, K-Monel, HY-series steels, Titanium, and other high-performance materials. We are seeking a highly motivated Operations Supervisor to lead a team of portable machinists and support the expanding demands of new construction and overhaul programs.

Role Overview

The selected individual will supervise approximately 10-15 machinists performing mobile machining operations on-hull and throughout the shipyard. This includes setup and operation of portable machining equipment such as line-boring systems, flange facers, manual and CNC driven mills, drill stands, valve-seat machining systems, and other field-deployable precision tools. The supervisor will ensure effective use of manpower and resources, manage daily work execution, and provide both technical and administrative support to the team.

This position requires strong experience in high-mix, low-volume machining environments and a solid understanding of precision machining practices applied in non-shop, on-hull conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Provide daily instruction and oversight for machinists, ensuring safe work practices are utilized in the execution of work
  • Direct daily field machining operations to meet quality, cost, and schedule goals in accordance with approved work plans.
  • Drive continuous improvement in machining processes, work control, safety, and span time reduction.
  • Ensure strict compliance with EB procedures, NAVSEA requirements, field machining controls, and safety regulations.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance for setup and operation of portable machining equipment and precision measurement in challenging, on-hull environments.
  • Manage trade performance, daily scheduling, manpower assignments, and cost tracking.
  • Deliver daily status updates to the General Foreman, including progress, issues, and resource needs.
  • Oversee training, qualification, coaching, and professional development of field machinists.
  • Promote and maintain a positive, inclusive team environment built on accountability, communication, and respect.
  • Ensure operator proficiency in machining exotic materials and in performing work within shipyard access-restricted or confined spaces.
  • Interface with all levels of EB management, NAVSEA/SUPSHIP/NR personnel, and supporting organizations.
  • Work collaboratively with HR and Employee Relations to resolve concerns and uphold EB standards of conduct.
  • Perform additional duties as required to meet organizational objectives.

  • Minimum of 1 year EB experience and an Engineering degree in a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years machining experience in a shop or portable application
  • Familiarity with testing procedures related to new construction or overhaul of major submarine components
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or technical degree
  • Experience supporting machining of complex components using portable/on-hull machining equipment or conventional shop-based HBM/VTC/lathe/mill operations
  • Strong practical knowledge of precision measurement practices and instruments used in field machining
  • Experience working in an ISO 9001/9100-certified machining environment
  • Thorough knowledge of machining data (speeds, feeds, tooling) for a wide variety of materials including steels, stainless steels, Monel alloys, Inconel, bronze, titanium
