Full Job Description

The Defense Sector at Leidos, supporting the Maritime Readiness Division, is seeking a Port Captain with a USCG Unlimited Tonnage Oceans with corresponding STCW certificates to support a dynamic high growth organization. The Port Captain will work remotely and support a wide variety of manned and unmanned vessels across numerous programs.

The Port Captain coordinates vessel schedules, crewing, readiness assessments, maintenance activities, inspections, and mission execution while maintaining compliance with applicable U.S. Coast Guard, STCW, and organizational requirements. The Port Captain applies extensive shipboard leadership and operational experience to assess vessel status, identify risks, resolve readiness issues, and support safe and effective operations across a dynamic fleet environment.

Serving as a key liaison between afloat personnel and shore-based support organizations, the Port Captain coordinates resources and priorities to sustain fleet availability and respond effectively to emergent operational requirements. The position supports emergency response activities as a member of the Incident Command System and provides experienced maritime leadership during casualties, maintenance periods, inspections, and mission-critical events.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Report to Logistics Platform Manager for vessel operations across programs

  • Provide operational oversight for assigned vessels to ensure safe, reliable, and mission-ready operations.

  • Monitor vessel readiness, maintenance status, regulatory compliance, and overall operational performance.

  • Coordinate vessel schedules, crewing requirements, maintenance periods, inspections, certifications, and mission tasking.

  • Serve as the primary shore-side liaison for vessel Masters and senior shipboard personnel, providing guidance and resolving operational issues.

  • Coordinate with engineering, maintenance, logistics, safety, crewing, and other shore-based support functions to maximize vessel availability.

  • Support vessels through maintenance availabilities, dry dockings, sea trials, readiness assessments, and return-to-service activities.

  • Track and facilitate compliance with U.S. Coast Guard, STCW, classification society, company, and customer requirements.

  • Review operational risks, identify emerging readiness concerns, and develop corrective actions or mitigation plans.

  • Provide experienced maritime guidance for navigation, seamanship, cargo operations, shipboard safety, and other marine operational matters.

  • Coordinate response to vessel casualties, emergencies, schedule disruptions, and other unplanned operational events.

  • Participate in the Incident Command System and support emergency response and contingency operations as required.

  • Support preparation for regulatory inspections, audits, Certificates of Inspection, readiness assessments, and other required evaluations.

  • Evaluate vessel and crew performance and provide recommendations to improve safety, operational effectiveness, and mission execution.

  • Maintain communication with customers and operational stakeholders regarding vessel status, capabilities, constraints, and projected availability.

  • Provide leadership and oversight to ensure vessels transition effectively between maintenance, certification, training, and operational mission requirements.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent

  • Ability to lift 40lbs

  • Must be able to communicate effectively

  • Must be a US Citizen

  • Must be able to gain access to obtain a Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating in a joint, Department of Defense, Military Sealift Command, U.S. Navy, or similarly complex maritime environment is highly desirable.

  • Master’s Degree

  • PMP Certification

Pay Range:
Pay Range $131,300.00 - $237,350.00
