As a University of Minnesota Duluth Police Officer, you will patrol, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, direct traffic, issue traffic citations, along with many other duties that will ensure the UMD campus is a safe and inclusive environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
Please note, this position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship. This position does not offer a STEM OPT training program.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Patrol assigned area on foot, bicycle, or patrol vehicle while interacting with the community, investigate reports of crime and provide public service (50%)
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service (20%)
- Work with the University community to increase safety through collaborations, problem solving, and education (5%)
- Direct automobile/pedestrian traffic on or near campus (5%)
- Administer medical treatment when necessary (5%)
- Issue traffic citations in University area; arrest violators of local ordinances and State and Federal statutes (5%)
- Other duties as assigned (10%)
Lateral pay considerations may be made for experienced licensed police officers. Lateral pay offers will be at the discretion of the Chief of Police in consultation with Human Resources, dependent upon a complete evaluation of prior experience and skills.
QualificationsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A two-year degree from an education program certified by the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board or a two year degree from a non-certified education program plus certification by the Minnesota POST Board. Must be eligible for license as a Peace Officer by the POST Board and remain actively licensed during employment. Police Officers from other states must qualify for reciprocity through the POST Board.
- Emergency Medical Response training or equivalent.
- Ability to successfully pass pre-employment:
- physical, medical, and psychological exams
- background investigation
- physical agility test
- oral interview.
- Must have a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- Knowledge of criminal and motor vehicles laws and ordinances, case law, department and University policies and procedures, proper use of force techniques and standards, and knowledge of weapon use and abilities.
- Ability to remain vigilant and multi-task while patrolling an area, while also monitoring a police radio to keep track of fellow officers' activity and gauge need for assistance.
- Ability to communicate well with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic groups in a wide variety of situations.
- Ability to act with authority in stressful situations in order to keep and/or maintain peace.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and individuals, run after individuals, climb fences/walls, use physical force to apprehend individuals, and operate a motor vehicle at extreme conditions.
