Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) is seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and service-oriented law enforcement professional to serve as Police Captain within the University Police Department. Reporting to the Chief of Police, the Police Captain provides leadership, supervision, and operational oversight to ensure a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This position plays a critical role in coordinating daily law enforcement activities, emergency response operations, community engagement initiatives, and departmental compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and university policies.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to community-oriented policing while fostering a culture of professionalism, integrity, accountability, and public service. As a key member of the department's command staff, the Police Captain will assist in advancing the mission of LSUS by promoting campus safety, supporting student success, and maintaining positive relationships with the university community and external law enforcement partners.

Minimum Qualifications

Five years of law enforcement experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:
  • Direct and coordinates the daily activities of the LSUS police department and may service as the principal assistant to Chief of Police
  • Manages a large division of lower-level officers within a small police department who are engaged in patrols, criminal investigations, emergency services, and crime prevention programs.
  • Coordinates operations and activities with other law enforcement organizations.
  • Interviews applicants, monitor officer compliance to departmental policies/procedures and serve as part of the officer disciplinary process, and counsels officers as necessary.
  • Acts as the Chief of Police during his/her absence and assumes all duties and responsibilities thereof.

Appointment Type: Promotional, open only to current permanent classified employees of LSU Shreveport.
