Position Description
Advertised Job Summary The Pharmacist serves in the South Carolina Poison Center and provides professional toxicology consultation and drug information services to healthcare professionals and the public. Under limited supervision of the Medical Director and Center Director, this position applies advanced pharmacologic knowledge and established poison center protocols to assess toxic exposures, evaluate medication-related risks, and recommend appropriate management strategies. The primary goal of the position is to ensure accurate, timely, and evidence-based poison and drug information guidance that supports patient safety and public health throughout South Carolina.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience - Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 1 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials - Licensed as a registered pharmacist by the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy
Preferred Qualifications - Experience in providing poison and drug information
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - Up-to-date knowledge of drug and poison information to relay to the public; and, or, skills to direct callers to appropriate caregivers in emergency situations.
Job Duties
Job Duty Provide Toxicology Consultation and Drug Information Services:Respond to poison exposure and medication-related inquiries from healthcare professionals and the public to promote safe and appropriate patient care. Utilize established toxicology protocols, pharmacologic resources, and professional judgment to assess exposure severity, evaluate risk, and recommend appropriate management or referral. Conduct follow-up evaluations as necessary to monitor patient outcomes and ensure continuity of care.

Job Duty Maintain Clinical Documentation and Regulatory Compliance:Document all consultations, assessments, recommendations, and follow-up activities in the poison center electronic data management system to ensure accurate records, regulatory compliance, and adherence to grant and quality assurance standards. Review case entries for completeness and accuracy.

Job Duty Contribute to Quality Improvement and Operational Support:Participate in case review, data analysis, and quality assurance activities to support continuous improvement of poison center services. Assist with development and refinement of protocols and contribute to research or reporting initiatives as assigned.
