Position Summary

The Platform Engineer is responsible for the engineering, governance, performance, and continuous evolution of Marathon Petroleum's ServiceNow platform. This role partners with product owners, process owners, architects, cybersecurity teams, and development teams to deliver scalable, secure, and supportable ServiceNow capabilities. The engineer will establish platform standards, oversee integrations and configurations, drive platform modernization, and ensure alignment with enterprise architecture and ServiceNow best practices.

This position belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency, and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidates experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts regular monitoring of infrastructure platforms and systems to identify performance issues or anomalies. Analyzes collected data, establishes performance baselines, and creates reports to identify trends and potential areas of improvement. Collaborates with senior engineers to implement performance tuning strategies and optimize platform & system resources for better efficiency.
  • Contributes to the design and implementation of new ServiceNow capabilities aligned with business and technology priorities. Leads the design and configuration of complex platforms & systems, considering best practices and industry standards. Conducts ongoing compliance with original design and configuration and corrects for deviation from standards. Builds and deploys highly available and scalable infrastructure solutions.
  • Documents support requests, resolutions, and troubleshooting steps. Provides technical support to users, troubleshoots and resolves complex hardware and software issues. Applies predefined procedures for platform & systems tuning and optimization using IT Service Management practices.
  • Assists with future infrastructure platforms and systems backup planning. Assists in the design & execution of disaster/system recovery and testing processes and standards.
  • Develops and implements reporting frameworks to track and analyze platform and system performance and utilization metrics; creates or leverages existing dashboards and visualizations for monitoring.
  • Contributes to the design and configuration of platform & systems, considering scalability, performance, security aspects, and ensures ongoing compliance with original design and configuration. Builds and deploys infrastructure components, ensuring proper configuration and integration.
  • Actively participates in knowledge sharing activities, such as team meetings, presentations, or workshops. Collaborates with team members to identify gaps in knowledge and propose solutions to improve documentation and information sharing.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelors Degree in Information Technology, related field or equivalent experience preferred
  • 2+ years of relevant experience required.
  • Experience with ServiceNow platform integration design, development and support preferred
  • Strong understanding of, and hands-on experience with, ServiceNow ITSM, ITAM, ITOM, CMDB, CSDM, Discovery, APM, SPM, Now Assist and AI capabilities preferred
  • Strong understanding of SDLC, Agile and Release Mgt processes preferred
  • Experience partnering with integrated suppliers, service providers, business facing IT, and stakeholders to deliver solutions preferred
  • ServiceNow certifications (e.g. CSA, CAD, CIS, etc) preferred

  • DevSecOps - A set of practices that automates the integration of security at every phase of the software development lifecycle, from initial design through integration, testing, deployment, and software delivery, with an aim towards shortening the systems development life cycle and pas well as continuous delivery and a security first approach.
  • General Programming - Applies a computer language to communicate with computers using a set of instructions and to automate the execution of tasks.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC) - The process of managing and provisioning infrastructure through code instead of through manual processes.
  • IT Infrastructure Management - Planning, design, delivery and control of information technology infrastructure.
  • Performance Monitoring - The process of measuring the performance of a system in real time in order to determine problems and identify other factors that may cause problems in the future.
  • Policy Management - The process of creating, implementing and maintaining policies and procedures within an organization.

It provides a standardized and cohesive infrastructure, allowing for the development, deployment, and integration of various technologies and services.
  • Systems Testing - The process of testing conducted on a complete integrated system to evaluate the systems compliance with its specified requirements.
  • Systems Integration - The process of linking together various IT systems, services and/or software to enable all of them to work functionally together.
