Job Summary:

The Manager Platform Engineering will direct development of a single crucial IT platform and contributes to strategic decisions that support long-term IT objectives. Oversees platform engineering team, building scalable and performant systems. Effectively manage diverse resources, including contractors as applicable.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Direct and oversee infrastructure developments and maintenance to ensure business requirements can be met.
  • Lead a team of highly motivated platform engineers, supporting complex architecture and design challenges.
  • Document the most complex "as is" and "to be" processes and describe the changes required to migrate to the "to be" capability to record accurately the change required.
  • Develop and maintain strategic roadmap for your platform, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Elicit the complex business requirements using a variety of methods, such as interviews, document analysis, workshops, and workflow analysis, to express the requirements in terms of target deliverables, features, and capabilities.
  • Communicate the actions needed to implement the function's strategy and business plan within the team; explain the relationship to the broader organization's mission, vision, and values; motivate people to commit to these and to do extraordinary things to achieve local business goals.
  • Develop straightforward business cases to quantify current costs, justify project investment, and identify the return on investment.
  • Gain a firm understanding of the organization’s expectations in regards to production incidents, strategic initiatives, and security concerns to effectively manage and prioritize work.
  • Manage and report on the performance of a substantial, diverse team; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports or project/account team members and hold individuals accountable for achieving them; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of team/personal objectives.
  • Use the organization's formal development framework to identify the team's individual development needs. Plan and implement actions, including continuing professional development specified by professional or regulatory institutions, to build their professional capabilities. Provide informal training or coaching to others throughout the organization in own area of expertise to enable others to improve performance and fulfill personal potential.
  • Develop and/or deliver budget plans with guidance from senior colleagues.
  • Manage segments of the organization's technology implementation, implementing methods and promoting efficiency.
  • Manage complex technical challenges, ensuring effective diagnosis of complex technical issues with software and experiments and the development of effective solutions.
  • Oversee a segment of technical support policies, optimizing operations to achieve specified results.
  • Participate in after-hours support escalation, including applicable oncall responsibilities
  • Plan and budget for training and growth opportunities for engineering team

Skills:

Required:

  • Monitor, interpret and understand standards, policies and procedures and ensure their alignment with organizational strategies and work objectives.
  • Determine and analyze trends from data that is collected to assist in compiling reports that will help in decision-making.
  • Understand, deploy, and manage various infrastructure components such as compute, storage, cloud, network, observability and tooling/automation.
  • Understand business context, needs, rules, and architecture, as well as organizational structure, cultures, capabilities, and processes to document the current state of processes and the business.
  • Monitor, diagnose and fix problems with technology products.
  • Express user needs in terms of business requirements, identify current capabilities to deliver, conduct build or buy analyses, and recommend preferred approach.
  • Create clear, comprehensive, effective, and user- friendly guides, manuals, narratives, and reports that convey complex technical concepts, using documentation tools to craft structured and visually appealing content that meets the intended purposes.
  • Conduct gap analysis between current and future states to identify components of the overall change strategy.
  • Provide input to architecture designs, incorporating system/ service requirements.
  • Develop an effective change strategy based on gap analyses and enterprise readiness assessment results, including transitions states and release plans.
  • Review and evaluate recommendations and requirements and to develop appropriate plans or deliver actions required.
  • Understand and execute architectures, policies and practices in order to manage the information lifecycle needs of an organization.
  • Utilize appropriate budget and resource planning tools to ensure effective and relevant resource plans, identifying and escalating capacity constraints when applicable.
  • Develop and maintain professional development plans for both individual contributors and the team, providing timely feedback via one on ones.
  • Conduct end of year evaluations, compose and track individual contributor goals, and participate in succession planning and promotion nominations.
  • Provide conflict resolution within the team and escalate to Senior Management and HR as needed and when applicable.
  • Effectively manage projects, ensuring work is clearly understood by team and progress is clearly communicated up the chain of command.
  • Manage service requests, ensuring appropriate SLAs are met, SOPs and KB articles are followed, and that individual contributors understand and follow appropriate processes and policies.

Preferred:

  • Project Management experience and/or certification
  • Experience with ITIL
  • Experience in an Agile environment
  • Experience managing private and public cloud environments, including leading migrations or modernization efforts

Education:  Master's Degree or Equivalent Level of Experience

Experience:  Wide and deep experience providing expert competence (10 years to 15 years)

Managerial Experience:  Experience of planning, managing and organizing resources within short / medium timescales within the overall policy framework. (4 years to 10 years)
