“I can succeed as the Senior Platform Engineering at Capital Group.” 


As a Senior Platform Engineer, responsible for leading the architecture, development, and scaling of our Internal Developer Platform (IDP) powered by Backstage.  In this role, you will take full technical ownership of the platform as a product to drastically lower cognitive load for our engineering and development teams.  Your primary mission is to establish secure, highly automated "golden paths" that empower the developers to create, deploy, and monitor workloads and services adhering to standards through self-service capabilities that you develop.  

 

Platform Ownership

·         You will architect, build, scale and operate the company's Internal Developer Platform using Backstage.

·         You will develop and maintain custom Backstage plugins, software templates (Scaffolder), and the software catalog.

·         You will integrate cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools directly into the Backstage UI.

·         You will design robust, secure, and scalable microservices and APIs that power the core platform.

·         You will collaborate with platform, cloud, security, application engineering teams and product manager to translate goals into concrete plugins and workflows

Developer Experience (DevEx) & Adoption

·         You will streamline developer workflows to reduce cognitive load and deployment friction.

·         You will evangelize the platform across engineering teams and drive high adoption rates.

·         You will create golden paths for software delivery, testing, and deployment.

·         You will gather feedback from engineers to continuously improve platform features and ease of use.

Operations & Reliability

·         You will ensure high availability, performance, and security of the Backstage instance and underlying services.

·         You will monitor platform metrics, troubleshoot bottlenecks, and resolve system outages.

·         You will automate platform deployments, updates, and maintenance tasks using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

Collaboration & Governance

·         You will collaborate with security, compliance, and infrastructure teams to bake guardrails into golden paths.

·         You will define and document platform standards, best practices, and architecture decisions.

·         You will mentor junior and mid-level engineers on platform engineering principles and Backstage best practices.

  • You have 8+ years of experience in platform engineering or DevOps, with hands-on production experience building, customizing, deploying, and supporting Spotify Backstage.
  • You have strong proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and React for developing frontend plugins, as well as Node.js/Express for backend plugin development.
  • You have strong proficiency in Python and Bash for automation and scripting.
  • You have extensive production experience with Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS.
  • You have a proven track record of developing custom Backstage plugins and integrations.
  • You have a solid DevOps foundation, including Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • You have experience working with authentication frameworks, Single Sign-On (SSO), and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
  • You have experience working with Backstage MCP actions.
  • You have a strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), software quality, reliability, and operational standards.
  • You have strong problem-solving abilities, a passion for mentoring others, and a product mindset focused on enhancing the developer experience.

Charlotte Base Salary Range: $136,749-$218,798

In addition to a highly competitive base salary, per plan guidelines, restrictions and vesting requirements, you also will be eligible for an individual annual performance bonus, plus Capital’s annual profitability bonus plus a retirement plan where Capital contributes 15% of your eligible earnings.
