Full Job Description
Job Summary:

Operates and maintains all plant operations equipment including all boilers, chillers, and HVAC systems. Operates and maintains all auxiliary equipment necessary to the operation of the medical center and all outlying clinics, such as pumps, motors, and compressors. Operates all machines and equipment vital to performing of maintenance and repair. Performs water treatment analysis and makes all adjustments as necessary.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Upholds Kaiser Permanentes Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws. Operates, maintains, inspects and performs repairs and mechanical alterations to manual and automatic gas and oil fired high pressure steam or high temperature hot water boilers. Operates, maintains, inspects and makes repairs to motors, steam reducing stations, expansion tanks, air compressors, supply and exhaust fans, pumps and valves, steam traps, water treatment systems, water heaters and related auxiliary equipment. Adjusts, maintains and tests boiler and air conditioning/refrigeration machinery, and all mechanical, electrical or pneumatic control instruments. Maintains safety devices and makes adjustments as necessary. Performs electrical repairs such as bed lamps, non-complex electrical devices, changing ballasts, and repairs electrical line cords, fixing light switches, isolating electrical problems and replacing fuses. Conducts electrical safety tests on equipment, electrical plugs and outlets. Tests boiler water, cooling tower water, and water from all other systems. Adds chemicals and makes appropriate adjustments as dictated by control parameters. Unclogs pipes and plumbing fixtures and related equipment as necessary. Performs routine repairs on such equipment as stethoscopes, otoscopes, opthalmoscopes, vacuum units, cart washers, autoclaves, oxygen outlets, air outlets, suction pumps, hospital beds, sinks, toilets and other associated hospital plant equipment.
  • Completes work assignments to include routine installations of plant equipment, hanging of signs and pictures, adjusting and maintaining time clocks. Determines type and extent of equipment malfunction, adjusting, disassembling, repairing or replacing of parts and components; reassembles and test equipment for safe and proper operation. Ability to read blueprints, schematics, single line diagram and repair manuals. Performs preventative maintenance to include cleaning, oiling, painting, calibration and other related duties to extend the life cycle of equipment, or to maintain a clean, safe, hygienic environmental work area. Through on the job training assists skilled maintenance persons in trade tasks in which employee is certified. Observes, takes readings, evaluates gauges and meters determining operating conditions, regulating equipment to control the operations in accordance with the needs of the medical center and all outlying clinics, existing state codes and safety standards. Cleans or oversees the cleaning of boilers and their associated machinery and equipment to include water towers, D.A. tanks. Records operating data in the appropriate logs. Isolates electrical problems related to plant industrial equipment and makes repairs as necessary. Repairs and maintains air conditioning and refrigeration equipment to include related electrical circuit analysis. Troubleshoots and repairs related equipment to include but not limited to thermostats, ice machines, humidifiers, air dampers and other related or associated equipment. Repair or modify equipment of plant structures by welding using both electrical or oxygen-acetylene equipment, cuts brazes and solders all types of metal materials. Performs locksmithing tasks to include cutting keys, fitting and installing locks. Maintains logs of all plant operations, HVAC systems and records maintenance repairs of alterations to equipment. Performs other related duties as required to include driving trucks or vans to outlying clinics or remote areas to facilitate or expedite maintenance requirements. Performs various maintenance tasks such as replacing filters, lubricating bearings and repairing cabinets. Repairs complex electrical devices and components requiring the use of schematic and wiring diagrams. Performs circuit analysis to localize, isolate and identify defective electrical components using precision test equipment to replace or repair defective components, restoring equipment to an operational state and performing calibration and electrical safety tests. Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organizations philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service. Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.

  • This position requires meeting three (3) of the following skill levels: San Bernardino County - Possession of the LA Unlimited Steam Engineers License and EPA Rule 608 Universal Certification. Riverside Medical Center- Possession of the LA Unlimited Steam Engineers License or the 500 HP LA City Steam Engineers License and EPA Rule 608 Universal Certification. Extensive knowledge of Central Plant, HVAC and electrical related equipment and systems, ability to trouble shoot electrical and mechanical systems required. Working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local codes required. *Those qualifying with refrigeration experience must possess EPA Rule 608 Universal Certification.
