Position Summary

The Value Chain Optimization (VCO) team has an opening for a Planning & Optimization Engineer for the North Region. This role reports through the VCO organization to the North Strategic Mid-Term Planning Director. The successful candidate will work closely with the Value Chain members to optimize the long-term profitability of the North value chain.

This individual will gain a more holistic long-term perspective of Marathon profitability and engage in cross-functional interaction with the Business Development team, Clean Products team, Crude and Feedstocks teams, Marketing, Refining-including Asset Development, and MPLX. The candidate will also broaden their knowledge base concerning North region market dynamics and total value chain optimization. The key characteristics to be successful in this role are communication, critical thinking, driving for results, and adaptability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of refinery operations, economics, and market dynamics across the value chain.
  • Manages the commercial planning aspects of the next three years for all regional refinery operations, including feedstock selection, product and intermediate placement, inventory optimization, seasonal inventory plays, supply chain optimization, and market analysis.
  • Independently curious about model results, proactively seeks different economic cases to develop optimal refinery planning solutions.
  • Completes and communicates LP based strategic analysis of regional assets to enhance understanding of asset strengths, opportunities, and challenges.
  • Develop optimized and executable regional business plans using linear programming simulation models.
  • Effectively communicates the mid-term planning economic strategies and drivers to the short-term planning team for further enhancement before execution.
  • Questions refinery constraints and proactively work with refinery resources to accurately model. Identifies and develops economic projects associated with constraint removal and works with sites to progress.
  • Lead the regional 10-year turnaround timing and production plan optimization through collaboration with value chain partners and LP model runs.
  • Manages project support cases independently. Possesses a deep understanding of refinery processes and commercial implications. Capable of analyzing complex data, identifying trends, and proposing solutions autonomously. Completes regional capital project evaluations utilizing the regional LP or spreadsheet-based economics, depending on the complexity, costs, and regional dependencies.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering required.
  • Four (4) years of relevant experience required. Technical Services or Economics & Planning experience preferred.
