ABOUT THIS POSITION The Planning & Development Department currently has a vacancy for a Building Code Examiner*Lead in the Plan Review Division. The Building Code Examiner*Lead performs administrative reviews of electronic commercial and residential plan submittals, including Self Certification projects. The role reviews construction plans for compliance with adopted building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and zoning regulations; provides code guidance to applicants by phone, email, or in person; and supplies technical information to field inspectors by researching records and maps. The Building Code Examiner*Lead advises applicants on required plans, review timelines, available options, and steps to resolve issues during the review process.
Key responsibilities include:
- Reviews all EPR plans for completeness, including Self Cert submittals
- Reviews complex construction plans and specifications for compliance with adopted codes and ordinances.
- Provides code and process guidance to applicants.
- Researches and enters technical data as required for sites, permits, or plans information into computer systems.
- Reads code updates and ordinance changes and attends seminars to keep current on code and ordinance changes.
- Provides technical information to field inspectors by reviewing and researching available records and maps.
- Issues commercial permits at a public counter.
- Coordinates with inspection staff to resolve construction document issues.
Opportunity to Underfill at the Building Code Examiner level. Consideration may be given to candidates to underfill as a Building Code Examiner. Individuals that do not meet the minimum requirements below for the Building Code Examiner*Lead may qualify for the opportunity to underfill at the Building Code Examiner level. Candidates at both levels should apply to this recruitment.

SALARY Building Code Examiner*Lead Pay Range: $37.58 to $55.41 per hour.
Hiring Range: $37.58 to $52.87 per hour.
Building Code Examiner Pay Range: $35.78 to $52.87 per hour.
Hiring Range: $35.78 to $43.49 per hour.

- Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 361 (Building Code Examiner*Lead) or a pay grade 359 (Building Code Examiner). If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.
- Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
- Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
- Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
- When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Building Code Examiner*Lead - Two years of experience reviewing plans, schedules, and other data to ensure proposed construction conforms to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes, zoning ordinance, and related regulations (Two years at the level of Construction Permit Specialist II).
- To be eligible for the assignment, must possess the following two certifications:
- ICC Building Plans Examiner (B3)
- ICC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner (21)
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
Building Code Examiner - Two years of experience reviewing plans, schedules, and other data to ensure proposed construction conforms to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes, zoning ordinance, and related regulations (Two years at the level of Construction Permit Specialist II).
- By the end of probation or within the first 12 months of lateral transfer, must obtain the following two certifications:
- ICC Building Plans Examiner (B3)
- ICC Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner (21)
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience with standard building construction materials.
- Experience interpreting and applying IBC and constructions codes.
- Experience in preparing and interpreting building construction plans.
- Experience using construction permit and electronic plan review software.
- Experience working in government jurisdiction.
- Experience reviewing construction plans.
- Experience working with the public or on a public counter.
