• PHYSICIAN MANAGER, KNOWLEDGE TRANSLATION
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Physician Manager, Knowledge Translation provides a central leadership role in the design and delivery of learning activities and products. This role is responsible for providing oversight and leadership to Physician Advisors who act as subject matter experts and are accountable for the content development and delivery of member-focused learning activities. The role oversees the development of the overall member-facing learning strategy, evaluation, and continuous improvement and all learning activities to enhance the Member Experience.
The Physician Manager, Knowledge Translation supports a team of Physician Advisors and Senior Education Specialists to ensure they are equipped, educated, and empowered to successfully meet the requirements of the department and the needs of members. The incumbent schedules the assignment of work activities, monitors individual and team performance, and provides ongoing coaching and feedback to employees involved in content development and delivery work.
This role leads and/or participates in various education-related working groups, committees, and projects. The incumbent collaborates with the SMC Insights & Thought Leadership management team to frame educational direction and the accompanying curriculum structure and priorities.
The incumbent works with the Director, SMC Insights & Thought Leadership to optimize work processes related to the development of learning activities. The incumbent supports effective team, departmental and cross-departmental communications, and works to promote a member-focused, professional and ethical culture and work environment.
Working closely with other SMCInTL leaders, this role collaborates with various cross-departmental and organizational-wide initiatives (eg. the wider SMC-EDI portfolio, Technology & Privacy, Strategic Engagement and Advocacy, Member Experience Performance & Evaluation, Medico-legal Services.)
POSITION ACTIVITIES
- Provides oversight and subject matter expertise to Physician Advisors and others in the areas of member learning for content development.
- Provides such expertise to Council and Council Committees on occasion.
- Provides ongoing feedback and reporting to the Director on achievement of plans and provides advice and insights into internal quality improvement and research targets.
- Responsible for the overall design and development of content for member learning programs.
- Accountable for ensuring that adult learning theory best practices are appropriately and effectively applied and integrated into learning programs.
- Actively manages a development and delivery schedule for Physician Advisors to ensure appropriate assignments and manageable workloads.
- Using judgment, evaluates incoming learning development and delivery requests from members or institutions, and analyze and assess if the request is aligned with resources and capacity for the KT team.
- Participates in the delivery of learning programs.
- Fosters a culture that promotes the health, wellness, safety, respect and dignity of employees as well as valuing individual integrity, ethical practice and social responsibility.
- Supports effective team communications.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of operational policies and procedures
- Connects and builds networks across the CMPA to foster collaborative work relationships
- Provides input into operational and strategic planning to meet the current and future business needs of the department
- Leads and/or participates in departmental and cross-departmental projects, as assigned
- Directs or supports stakeholder relationships as assigned by senior leadership
- Performs a reduced but active Physician Advisor, KT workload and related responsibilities
- Provides ongoing direction, coaching, motivation and guidance to a cross-functional team.
- Performs leadership duties such as designing job descriptions, recruiting new employees, managing employee performance, planning short and long-term initiatives, and communicating the departmental and strategic plans.
- Prepares and conducts regular team meetings to maintain a team environment conducive to open communication, true collaboration and exchange of information.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- A degree in medicine with licence to practice medicine in Canada
- Medical degree (MD) and at least 10 years of experience in the provision of clinical care
- Minimum of 3-5 years of people leadership experience
- Management courses and/or leadership training are an asset
- Experience in the development and delivery of online and onsite education
- Experience in operational planning, budgeting, and performance management is an asset
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Sound knowledge of patient safety, adult education, and innovative learning modalities
- Strong communicator with excellent verbal and written communication skills in English

- Ability to provide direction, advice, coaching and feedback to team members

- Ability and willingness to travel across Canada
- Ability to produce high-quality educational materials for both synchronous and asynchronous learning assets
- Organizational awareness and commitment, including an awareness of the dual responsibility to the Association and the team/department
- An appreciation for the value of innovation and the ability to actively participate in implementing improvements to departmental processes and practices
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant federal, provincial and territorial legislation affecting day-to-day medical practice is an asset
- Previous administrative management expertise is an asset
- The ability to work in French is an asset
POSTING DETAILS
- Job type: This is a regular full-time opportunity.
- This posting is for an existing vacancy.
- Salary range: $273,000 to $365,200 - this role is classified as a level P3
- Location: Hybrid - Primary Remote. You can work from a home-based office the majority of the time within the provinces of Ontario and Québec, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (1-2 days per week). If you prefer, you can choose to work out of the CMPA office in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow's Lake.
