Position Details:

Mercy Hospital Joplin, a major regional referral center serving more than 500,000 people across four states, is seeking a dynamic and visionary Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to lead clinical strategy, quality improvement, physician engagement, and operational excellence. This executive leadership role is instrumental in advancing Mercy's mission of delivering exceptional, compassionate care while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.

Position Overview

The Chief Medical Officer serves as the senior physician executive for Mercy Hospital Joplin and works closely with hospital leadership, physicians, and caregivers to ensure delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. The CMO is responsible for advancing clinical excellence, improving quality outcomes, promoting patient safety, and strengthening physician engagement throughout the organization.

This position partners closely with operational leaders and medical staff to support Mercy's commitment to delivering exceptional healthcare across the region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic oversight and coordination of contracted Medical Directors in collaboration with operational leadership.
  • Lead and actively participate in quality improvement, risk management, patient safety, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Champion efforts to position Mercy Hospital Joplin and its affiliated hospitals as the healthcare provider of choice throughout the region.
  • Drive continuous improvement in clinical outcomes, patient experience, and operational performance.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, respect, accountability, and professional development among physicians and clinical teams.
  • Partner with physician leaders and administrators to advance organizational goals and strategic priorities.
  • Integrate quality improvement, risk mitigation, and patient safety initiatives across departments and service lines.
  • Serve as a key leader in physician engagement, recruitment, retention, and leadership development.
  • Dedicate full-time effort to the Chief Medical Officer role.


Qualifications
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Board certification in a recognized specialty.
  • Minimum of five years of clinical practice experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience as a Medical Director, Department Chair, Chief of Staff, or other physician executive role.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare operations, clinical governance, quality improvement, and medical management.
  • Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills.
