Overview

The Physician Assistant is supervised by the House Surgeon. He/she works in the patient care unit with the House Surgeon and other in-house staff (Interns, Residents and Students).

Responsibilities

  • Obtains detailed history and perform physical examination on surgical and assigned patients. Such duties may be performed in the Pre-Surgical Testing Unit, the Operating Room Suite, and all Patient Care Units.
  • Writes progress notes on patients' charts which relates to the status of the patient, the treatment being rendered and the plan of care.
  • Writes appropriate orders on the patients' charts including pre and post-operative orders. Such orders must be countersigned by House Surgeon or Attending Physician.
  • Requests laboratory work-ups, x-rays, etc. on patients and ensure completion through follow-up.
  • Performs daily rounds and dressing changes if applicable.
  • Starts IV's as required and draw blood if required.
  • Inserts naso-gastric tube and Foley catheter as required. Checks pre-operative work-up prior to scheduled surgery.
  • Take consents as for Interventional/Operative procedures.
  • Makes sure pertinent x-rays are available in the operating room. Assists in all surgical procedures.
  • Participates in appropriate CME programs.
  • Prepares discharge summaries and instructions.
  • May be a part of the team that is responsible for consultations and evaluating those on the In-Patient Care Units and in the Emergency Room.
  • Attend clinic sessions when assigned and as required.
  • Physician Assistants on specialty services may be called upon to assist in other areas of Surgery when necessary.
  • The physician assistant is not responsible for answering consultations on the in-patient care unit and in the emergency department, although he/she may be part of the team evaluating the patient.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Health Sciences, required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.

Experience:
  • Orthopedic experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Computer knowledge to effectively utilize electronic medical records.

Licenses, Certifications:
  • Licensed and currently registered as a Physician Assistant in New York State.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification, preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Involves standing, walking, sitting, lifting and talking.
  • May include some repetitive motions.
