Job Description

The Clinical Research Physician Assistant is a professional physician assistant who possesses the education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide expert care in the area of clinical research with physician oversight. The primary responsibilities of the Clinical Research Physician Assistant are the direct application of clinical expertise to study participants in the Dermatology Clinical Research Unit (DCRU). The Clinical Research Physician Assistant works collaboratively with the Director of the DCRU, Principal Investigators, and research staff to conduct study procedures per protocol. The Clinical Research Physician Assistant has responsibility for maintaining quality of care standards for all procedures performed and for ensuring all clinical care meets regulatory standards for the patients participating in clinical trials. The Clinical Research Physician Assistant evidences self-direction, accountability, and an attention to detail.

The Clinical Research Physician Assistant shall provide care under the direction of the Medical Director for shift duties. The Physician Assistant shall function in accordance with granted privileges, standardized procedures and policies. Incumbent will perform other duties as needed.

About the Dermatology Clinical Research Unit

The Dermatology Clinical Research Unit (DCRU) at Mount Zion is an outpatient clinical research unit to support observational and investigational research studies through the Department of Dermatology.

Working in collaboration with the Director and study personnel, performs duties (such as venipuncture, skin biopsies, skin swabs, physical assessments, Point-of-Care testing, and other activities) to support clinical research protocols with research volunteers.

Follow Dermatology Clinical Research Unit (DCRU), university, and state/federal policies and regulations for medication administration, infection control, and patient and staff safety.

Qualifications

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.

Required Qualifications:
  • Six (6) months of experience as a Physician Assistant
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent leadership/problem identification/resolution and precise documentation
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Recent experience in clinical research
  • Demonstrated competence in the following areas: phlebotomy, medication administration, IV insertion, EKG, medication administration (i.e. IV therapy, IM, SQ injections), excellent communication skills,
  • Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with patients with stigmatizing skin diseases and their families
  • Demonstrated experience working independently as a PA and exercising independent clinical judgment.
  • Ability to escalate significant adverse changes or clinical findings through appropriate chain of command
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks with competing deadlines in a fast paced environment
  • Professional computer skills and competent in the use of PC compatible software including MS Office, proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Demonstrates self direction and accountability
  • Ability to communicate patient education around office-based dermatologic procedures, including risks, benefits, outcomes, and post-procedure wound care
  • Starts work at scheduled time and completes work on time
  • Complies with dress code, including appropriate identification


Required Licenses and/or Certifications:
• California Physician Assistant (PA) License without restriction
• National Board Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
• California Driver License (if required for position)
• Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Additional required AHA certifications: None additional to BLS

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Documented training on Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Knowledge of University guidelines, IRB/CHR requirements
