Summary

The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor functions under the general supervision of the Pharmacy Service in providing direct oversight and accountability of inpatient pharmacy at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.

Duties

Major Duties:

The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor provides the framework, philosophy, and environment for effective inpatient pharmacy staff

participation in clinical activities to include:

• Identification of any drug induced problems that may be affecting the patient or contributing to the need for therapy.
• Recommendations to the attending and resident physicians for optimal management of drug-inducted problems either verbally and/or in writing.
• Interpret laboratory data to evaluate the efficacy of drug therapy and to anticipate side effect, toxicity, or adverse effects. Evaluate the various therapeutic alternatives; develop a therapeutic plan utilizing the most efficacious, least toxic, and most economic pharmacologic treatment modalities available.

DISTRIBUTIVE

• Maintains familiarity with inpatient pharmacy operations and dispensing procedures to ensure proper understanding of workload implications.
• Assists with prescription processing based on needs of the service.
• Provides patient medication counseling on proper use and care of medications through a variety of communication methods if needed.

EDUCATION

• Identifies and plans for continuing education and staff development needs of the inpatient pharmacy staff.
• Provides the environment and resources for the participation of pharmacy personnel in providing drug information to the hospital staff and other facilities as deemed responsible for maintaining his/her professional competency by keeping up with information on new drugs, new drug therapies, innovations in pharmacy practice, and to integrate this information into daily practice.

ADMINISTRATIVE

• Assists in interviewing, evaluating, and selecting new employees according to current Federal laws and VA policies regarding EEO and veterans' preference.
• Supervises and coordinates the daily work in and between the various areas of the Central Pharmacy and the many inpatient satellites.
• Assists in developing and maintaining a cooperative working relationship with other departments such that the overall activities and scope of inpatient pharmacy services rendered are carried out efficiently.
• Supervises, evaluates, and documents performance and counsel employees under his/her supervision.

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT

• Coordinates activity with the Outpatient Pharmacy Supervisor as well as other supervisors to assure that patients receive a continuum of care.
• Conducts quality assurance projects as deemed necessary.
• Assists in the gathering, coordinating, and reporting of data from various functional areas at the required time and assists in conducting and reporting internal audits as required

RESEARCH

• Assists in the coordination of the medical research program. He/she provides oversight of the custody, dispensing, and maintenance of INDs. He/she coordinates with staff to maintain records of receipt and dispensing, preparation, administration, and clinical monitoring.

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday 6:00am-2:30pm or 7:00am-3:30pm primarily, other Tour of Duty as needed; Weekend and Holidays as needed

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

Education:

Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Graduate of a foreign pharmacy degree program if you are able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT). (CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)

Licensure: Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.

In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must meet the following:

GS-13 Grade Determinations:Pharmacy Supervisor (Inpatient)

Experience. In addition to the GS-12 requirements, must have 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Experience includes: Interpret laboratory data to evaluate the efficacy of drug therapy and to anticipate side effect, toxicity, or adverse effects; Identification of any drug induced problems; Supervises, evaluates, and documents performance and counsel employees under his/her supervision.

AND,

Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs):

1. Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff.

2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.

3. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy.

4. Skill in managing people or programs.

Pharmacy Supervisor. Responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include budgetary execution. Such individuals have responsibilities for supervising multiple pharmacists and technicians. Manages people, maintains effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperates with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals. Develops performance standards, assures that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, and develops and maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. Develops policies and procedures relative to their assigned area.

Preferred Experience: A minimum of 2-3 years experience in Inpatient Pharmacy Staffing to include 2 years supervisor experience within VA.

Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: The work is performed within the pharmacy and the medical center, and at times may require travel. The incumbent observes safety precautions while working with a variety of equipment. Work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions (e.g., risk exposure to caustic agents, flammable liquids when unpacking supplies or cleaning equipment). The incumbent works with drugs and chemicals in which care must be taken in the event accidental contact is made to the skin, eyes and lungs. Incumbent follows guidelines for preparation, handling and administration of hazardous drugs and disposal of all pharmaceutical waste in compliance with medical center policy.
