As a member of the system-level leadership team, the Pharmacy Operations & Compounding Manager is responsible for both the management of compounding practices for the health system as well as the management of site-specific operations at the Bucyrus and Galion Hospital campuses. The Pharmacy Operations & Compounding Manager is supported by an Assistant Pharmacy Operations Manager, Charge Pharmacist, and various support personnel.
The Pharmacy Operations & Compounding Manager is responsible for oversight of non-sterile, sterile, and hazardous compounding practices, which includes both clean room suites and unclassified compounding areas. Specific responsibilities include:
- Operations and Compounding Innovation: Keeps up to date on trends in pharmacy operations and compounding; moves pharmacy practices forward to ensure efficient operations; plans for future growth and enhancements.
- Compliance: Creates, implements and manages compounding systems that are compliant with USP 795, 797, and 800 as well as accrediting bodies (DNV) and state and federal rules and laws; creates and maintains organizational policies and procedures related to compounding; and oversees hazardous medication management and Assessments of Risk.
- Compounding Management: Manages all compounding practices in each compounding location; oversees compounding technology (IV workflow software and automation); record keeping; facilities and engineering controls; staff training and evaluation.
- Compounding Growth and Expansion: Anticipates and responds to health system needs for expanded compound services and implements solutions.
- Quality Assurance and Productivity: Establishes quality monitors for operations and compounding; manages productivity related to compounding, batching, and repackaging with a focus on the reduction of drug and labor waste.
- Staff Development: Oversees compounding competency for all staff.
Site-specific operations manager responsibilities include:
- Manages day-to-day operations and supervises pharmacy staff.
- Serves as first point of contact for operations by ancillary and clinical department leaders.
- Coordinates and leads staff huddles/meetings; maintains effective bidirectional communication with staff and leadership.
- Sets and prioritizes goals for self and departments.
- Develops and leads staff teams to accomplish departmental goals.
- Effectively delegates tasks to staff teams, Assistant Operations Manager, and other support staff.
