Overview

In 1971, Yale University established Yale Health to provide health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Yale Health has more than 50,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world. With over 50 years of service to the Yale community, our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, is where our members receive most of their care from our 150+ providers. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy.


Reporting to the Director of the Yale Health Pharmacy, the Pharmacist is responsible for all aspects of pharmacy operations within the department including:

preparation and dispensing of medications, coaching/managing of staff, workflow, inventory maintenance and the ability to provide a high level of care/service to Yale Health patients.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Perform clinical screening including checking for proper drug prescribed dosage, drug interaction and instructions to patients.

  • Consult with clinicians on dosage, medication interactions and other clinical issues, counsel patients on correct usage of medications and on possible drug interactions with other prescriptions.

  • Provide accurate drug information to healthcare personnel, monitor and maintain records on quantity, quality and type of drugs utilized, ensure emergency carts, Acute Care cabinets and other clinical areas are stocked with proper medication.

  • Participate in healthcare fairs and other member programs, work on various pharmacy-related committees.

  • Participate in disease management programs, provide coaching and execute operational oversight discussions with technician staff.

  • Operate a cash register, when necessary

  • Participate in department meetings and maintain a perpetual CII inventory.

Schedule:  Full-time, 40 hours/week rotating schedule Monday -Friday based on pharmacy hours of operation, 8 am – 6 pm, Saturdays 8 am – 3 pm. Weekends and holidays/recess periods in rotation


Required Skills and Abilities
1. Thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding pharmaceutical products, pharmaceutical and pharmacological principles related to drugs, and procedures and protocols around notification and error reporting.

2. Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, computer and analytical skills. Excellent patient counseling skills.

3. Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility to move between tasks or procedures as operational priorities shift.

4. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a supportive and collaborative pharmacy team.

5. Excellent attendance, punctuality and reliability skills.

6. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated experience with disease management programs and mail order systems.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Compounds and dispenses medications used in treatment in accordance with laws and regulations. 2. Determines identity, purity and strength of drugs by assessing formulations and compounds. 3. Verifies and consults with physicians on dosage and viability of generic medications. 4. Reviews all medication orders for in-patients and ambulatory patients. 5. Advises patients on correct usage of drugs and on possible drug interactions with other prescriptions. 6. Ensures adherence to policies and procedures, legal and regulatory compliance including Board of Pharmacy, HIPAA, DEA, USP.  Supports organizational and departmental efforts in seeking or maintaining accreditation including Joint Commission and other federal and state agencies related to clinical practice. 7. Provides accurate drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health personnel. 8. Monitors and maintains records on quantity, quality, and type of drugs utilized. 9. Ensures continuity of supply, service, and information concerning drugs and products. 10. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacology and three years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required License(s) or Certification(s) State of Connecticut Pharmacist license or Connecticut License eligible. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
