Summary

The NIH Clinical Center Pharmacy is seeking an exceptionally talented, knowledgeable, and motivated Pharmacist for its Outpatient Section. The incumbent of this position will serve as a Pharmacist in the Pharmacy Operations Section supporting hospital pharmacy services.

An ideal candidate for the pharmacist working in the Outpatient section would be someone exceptionally talented, knowledgeable, and motivated to: (1) provide pharmaceutical care to outpatients and inpatients preparing for discharge, (2) provide comprehensive medication counseling and drug information, (3) review and verify prescriptions while ensuring research protocol compliance, (4) handle and dispense controlled and investigational drugs, (5) utilize automation and will call bin management to streamline workflows and speed up the filling process (6) provide compassionate customer service, (6) apply knowledge of pharmacy laws and regulations including FDA and DEA requirements as well as Joint Commission standards.

As a Pharmacist with the NIH Clinical Center's Pharmacy Department, your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

• Providing pharmaceutical care to a complex, specialized patient population
• Actively collaborate with in-house staff and clinical researchers in the design and implementation of research protocols, collection of data, and in analysis and interpretation of results.
• Monitoring active investigational studies to ensure policies concerning use of investigational drugs are being followed.
• Serving as authoritative consultant with direct interaction and communication with patients to obtain complete drug histories.
• Designing, conducting and participating in drug utilization studies, audits and evaluations.
• Serving as pharmacy liaison with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other staff on units to resolve drug related problems.
• Designing and conducting interdisciplinary educational programs in the area of drug therapy.
• Interfacing with physicians in the design of drug treatment plans.
• Evaluating drug literature in order to compare and contrast therapeutic regimens and uses for new and existing pharmaceutical products.
• Researching and answering complicated drug information questions.

• The work requires long periods of standing, stretching, bending, crouching, walking, and carrying of light objects.
• The work is performed primarily in inpatient, outpatient, laboratory, and central pharmacy areas, but may overlap into patient care units for nursing support.
• Due to frequent contact with patients, compliance with aseptic techniques, safety regulations and Clinical Center policies and procedures are required.
• Work may also expose incumbent to infectious diseases, e.g. tuberculosis and investigational drug therapy for which very little information is known.
• If selected, you must pass a pre-employment medical examination, provide evidence of immunization, and be free from communicable diseases.
• Based on your appointment, a one-year probationary period may be required. A decision regarding your continued employment with NIH will be made as you near the end of this period.
• Must distinguish basic colors.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:

Education:

A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR

Applicants who have a bachelor's degree in pharmacy may also qualify contingent upon an additional review of your qualifications.

Licensure:

You must also have an active, current license as a pharmacist in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional Qualification:

In Addition to the above, in order to meet the Minimum Qualifications for a Pharmacist, GS-660 position at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of professional pharmacy experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing outpatient pharmacy dispensing services; preparing sterile/non-sterile hazardous and non-hazardous products; identifying and preventing adverse drug reactions and interactions; ensuring correct labeling, handling and storage of pharmaceutical products; advising physicians on medication selection, dosing and administration; ensuring research protocol compliance with investigational drugs; providing oversight and training of technical support staff and managing the distribution of controlled medications.

• This position is designated as an 'emergency' position and the selected candidate will be considered as an 'emergency' employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances, e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapse in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations for operation 24 hours a day and 365 per year coverage.
