What's the Role and What You'll Do
We're looking for a highly motivated, customer service-oriented professional to fill either a Permit Technician or Senior Permit Technician position. The ideal candidate brings outstanding customer service skills and enjoys working on development permits. In this role, you will join a fast-paced, dynamic team environment. Using strong communication skills, you will thrive on a high volume of daily interactions with internal and external customers via email, phone, virtually, or at the Permit Center public counter. The Senior Permit Technician role has increasing responsibilities working on larger multifamily, commercial or mixed-use development projects, coordinating preconstruction meetings with City staff and contractors, and may assist in training and mentoring Permit Technicians. This position (at either level) receives direct supervision from the Permit Center Coordinator and may exercise technical supervision over other office staff. Permit Technician
  • Efficiently process building and fire protection permit applications and ensure all necessary approvals are obtained from City Departments and external agencies.
  • Perform elementary plan check duties on same-day permits, reviewing applications for completeness and conformance to building/fire codes, and City requirements following appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries and confer with developers, engineers, contractors, architects, and the public concerning development review requirements, building and fire codes, and permit regulations in-person at the public counter, on the phone, virtually or by email.
  • Build positive working relationships with customers and other City staff to successfully manage permits from initial submittal to construction completion.
  • Calculate and collect various plan check and permit fees as necessary.
  • Prepare and coordinate property and project inspection data and assist with the gathering of data for inspection reports and investigations.

Senior Permit Technician

In addition to the duties of the Permit Technician, the Senior Permit Technician will:
  • Perform complex plan checking duties and review development applications for completeness and for conformance to building codes, City requirements, and other appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Exercise strong project management skills to oversee, track and advance permit applications from their submittal through completion of construction.
  • Be a lead on certain permit programs, such as ExpressPermitsMV, Preapproved Accessory Dwelling Units, etc.
  • Effectively communicate code or permit requirements to a variety of audiences.
  • Coordinate meetings between City staff, contractors, and applicant development teams.
  • Act as a mentor and provide technical direction on permits and processes to Permit Technicians or other building staff.
  • Resolve permit review complications, complaints and customer service issues.


The Essentials
Permit Technician

Fine Print. The annual salary range for a Permit Technician is $91,318 - $110,961. The annual salary range for a Senior Permit Technician is $103,257 - $125,515. Pay beyond the control point may be awarded for exceptional experience and qualifications upon hire and/or for meritorious performance while serving.
