Position Title

Perfusionist

Heart Center

Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Perfusionist, under the general supervision of the physicians and the Chief Perfusionist, provide life support to critically ill patients. Participate in the support of the clinical perfusion service by assisting with the design, stocking and purchasing of equipment and disposables utilized during extracorporeal circulation.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Assess each surgical case and assists the nursing staff in making appropriate choices of perfusion supplies needed at the OR tables.
  • Assess each surgical case and makes recommendations to the primary surgeon concerning cannula selection.
  • Assure regulatory requirements are met and continuous quality improvement occurs as evidenced by performing monthly audits of quality control data, quality improvement indicators/thresholds, and documentation of improvements for all aspects of care relating to perfusion.
  • Assures daily that sufficient supplies and equipment are ready for use in an emergency.
  • Carries a pager and responds within thirty (30) minutes to emergency as well as routine calls.
  • Communicates routine information as well as any deviation from normal to anesthesia and surgical personnel.
  • Completely fills in perfusion records, checklists, and inventory lists. Files each appropriately. In accordance with established protocol, sets up and primes the heart lung machine and cardioplegia circuits according to the American Society of Extracorporeal Technology perfusion scope of practice. Maintains laboratory instruments used in the OR arena, including maintenance, quality control, and appropriate documentation.
  • Processes all remaining blood from the CPB circuit with autologous blood recovery equipment if requested.
  • Appropriately labels transfusion packs and completes required paperwork.
  • Routinely monitors acid-base, hemodynamic and hemostatic parameters.
  • Maintains parameters within normal limits. Sets up, operates, and supervises the insertion of intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP) along with Physiological Monitoring and Instrumentation (PM&I) personnel.
  • Surveys patient chart to assess the scope of disease/illness and makes appropriate judgments concerning prime selection, additional fluid choices, drug usage during priming CPB and techniques of conducting CPB.
  • Systematically records all parameters pertaining to perfusion.
  • Thoroughly cleans all equipment with appropriate solutions/agents.
  • Any other responsibilities as asked by the chief perfusionist, surgical, anesthesia or nursing personnel.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
