Department Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University along with the Division of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery is seeking a talented MD/DO board-certified (or equivalent) pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist, to lead the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology team at VCU.

Our Pediatric Anesthesia group is comprised of 10 faculty with support from CRNAs. Three of our existing faculty members are experienced in cardiac and can serve as backup for this role. The pediatric anesthesiologist dually report to the chair of Anesthesia and the Surgeon in Chief for the Children's Hospital. Our pediatric anesthesiologists are committed to taking care of Children 100% of the time.

Duties & Responsibilities:

This position will be based in Richmond and offers the unique opportunity to participate in clinical practice, academic endeavors, as well as fellow, resident, and medical student education. Experience in the full spectrum of congenital heart disease is expected, including complex neonates, adult congenital heart disease, mechanical cardiac support, and heart transplantation. This individual will be responsible for coordinating anesthesia care on all patients with congenital heart disease, including but not limited to, the operating room, the cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology laboratory, and non-invasive laboratory for sedated echocardiographic and cardioversion procedures.

The Pediatric Cardiology Division is growing and is now comprised of 10 Physicians, 3 Nurse Practioners and has an active, vibrant fellowship led by their Chief, Dr. Christopher Snyder. The Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Division is excited to announce the arrival of Dr. Brian Kogon as the new Chief of Congenital Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Kogon is an expert in the care of Children and Adults with Congenital Cardiac Disease and comes with over 20 years of experience. All aspects of pediatric cardiac care are currently located within the VCU Health System including congenital surgery, diagnostic and interventional catheterization, fetal,

electrophysiology and basic science. Services have transitioned to the new inpatient children's tower, which includes a state-of-the-art hybrid cardiac procedure suite (cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology lab, and operating room).

Drs. Kogon and Snyder, are working in collaboration with their counterparts, Drs. Tom L'Ecuyer and Jay Gangemi, from the University of Virginia Children's Hospital to establish a unique model of care for Children and Families in Virginia. The motto of the collaborative, Virginia Congenital Cardiac Collaborative (VC3), is "two campuses, one program". The mission of this collaboration is to provide patient care at the highest level of quality and safety, expand research, and education in the patients local community. The goals of the collaborative are fully supported by both institutions (VCU and UVA) and leadership of both Children's Hospitals.

  • The ability to work collegially within a multidisciplinary system is essential
  • The role of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist will be to lead the day-to day Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology operations, as well as to be engaged in Quality and Safety Initiatives, Community Outreach, and interdepartmental proceedings
