Job Title: Payroll AnalystJob Description
This Payroll Analyst role serves as a critical link between Payroll and Accounting, facilitating workload management across both teams. The position involves approximately 60% Accounting and 40% Payroll & Benefits responsibilities, with a significant focus on payroll accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, reporting, and data analysis. The ideal candidate will be adept at working with large datasets, possess a solid understanding of accounting principles, and be capable of supporting payroll operations when necessary.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and post payroll-related journal entries, accruals, and reclasses.
  • Reconcile payroll-related balance sheet and GL accounts.
  • Analyze payroll expenses and provide variance explanations to Finance and Operations teams.
  • Work with extensive payroll datasets to identify trends, discrepancies, and reporting insights.
  • Support payroll processing for salaried, hourly, and multi-provincial employees.
  • Assist with payroll remittances, benefits administration, and statutory filings.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end payroll accounting activities.
  • Create and maintain payroll and management reports using Excel and ERP systems.
  • Assist with payroll audits, compliance requirements, and process documentation.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives and systems-related projects.
  • Reconcile payroll data, deductions, taxable benefits, and remittances.
  • Review payroll transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with federal and provincial legislation.
  • Provide backup support in payroll processing when required and complete other ad hoc tasks as assigned.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of accounting experience, including journal entries, debits and credits, GL reconciliations, and account analysis.
  • Experience working with large datasets and high transaction volumes.
  • Experience supporting multi-entity and multi-site organizations.
  • Advanced Excel skills with the ability to analyze, manipulate, and interpret payroll or financial data.
  • Experience using a large-scale ERP system (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Microsoft).
  • Strong understanding of payroll accounting principles and payroll-related reconciliations.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to partner with Finance, Payroll, and Operations teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience supporting organizations with large employee populations (600+ employees preferred).
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
  • Experience with Ceridian software.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation.
  • Knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation and payroll remittances.
  • Experience with Dynamics 365.
  • Exposure to payroll audits, statutory reporting, T4/T4A processing, WCB, EHT, and year-end payroll activities.
Work Environment
The role reports directly to the Payroll Manager/Director of Finance and is part of a team of six. The position follows a hybrid working model with four days in the office and one day at home, totaling 40 hours a week with occasional extra hours during payroll periods and year-end. The start time is generally 9 am, with flexibility to start and finish early to accommodate different time zones. The payroll team manages a bi-weekly payroll cycle for 12,000 employees across North America, supported by an outsourced payroll provider. The work environment is dynamic, with opportunities for career growth and exposure to multiple industries within a large, stable organization.
