Full Job Description

We are a contract of innovators, thinkers, creators, explorers, volunteers and dreamers and we all share one goal: to improve the world responsibly and safely. On the Human Health and Performance Contract we are at the forefront of safeguarding astronaut health, ensuring human performance, and advancing technologies for human space exploration. We are seeking a Hardware Payload Support Engineer (PSE) at the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX.

What You’ll Do:

In this position, you will play a role in supporting the implementation of Human Research on the International Space Station (ISS), Artemis, and flight analogs at JSC/NASA.  Responsibilities of a Hardware PSE include being a subject matter expert on medical and standalone experiment hardware used during human science research experiments conducted on the ISS, Artemis, or ground analogs.  Medical hardware includes devices such as centrifuges, ultrasounds, Actigraphy devices, as well as experiment-unique hardware provided by the investigator or external partners.  The Hardware PSE also conducts pre-mission software testing and verification activities, writes documentation, and implements the systems level engineering elements needed to support experiment operations. Hardware PSEs also assist in the preparation for crew training activities and train the crew on Human Research Facility hardware.  As a member of the ground control team on console, the Hardware PSE is responsible for monitoring the health and status of all active medical hardware and software and contribute to the anomaly resolution process.

This role is part of the Research Operations and Integration (ROI) element of the Human Research Program (HRP) in the Operations Department of the Human Health and Performance Contract 2 (HHPC2) supporting NASA’s Space Medicine Operations Division (SD). 

 You will:

  • Sit console in support of Human Life Sciences operations using HRP hardware
  • Prepare hardware for crew and ground control training and simulations
  • Develop hardware and software operating procedures and processes
  • Serve as hardware subject matter expert (SME) for mission operations and interface with the ROI Engineering team for anomaly resolution for sub-rack and experiment hardware and software
  • Create, maintain and publish Hardware Operations Documents per assigned deployed hardware items and SME assignments
  • Reviews Change Requests (CRs) and assesses them for impacts to the operational products and/or documents
  • Train Ground Support Personnel and crewmembers on hardware
  • Perform software testing and verification
  • Serve as liaison to science, hardware, software and flight analog teams

You bring experience and engineering expertise.  You use your experience and judgment to ensure successful execution of operations using assigned hardware. You comply with KBR’s Safety, Health and Environmental Plan, Quality Plan, and all safety policies and procedures, and complete all assigned training.

Your Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or closely related field
  • Previous experience working with biomedical hardware, solving complex problems, and working to develop solutions quickly.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.

Your Skills:

1. Required:

  • Technical competence in engineering and computing
  • Effective communication (both written and oral), and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform in highly visible and stressful situations.
  • Must be reliable, adaptable, and capable of working in a team environment
  • Must be able to work various shifts

2. Desired:

  • Programming skills (Visual Basic, .NET, or C#)
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and 3D printing
  • Data visualization experience (Microsoft Power Tools including Power BI)
  • Knowledge concerning remote access protocols

What to Expect

This position is expected to be 100% on site and in person during training and or certification. Telecommuting may be accommodated once training and/or certification is complete.  Occasional travel may be required.

Pay Range:
Pay Range $57,850.00 - $104,575.00
