Requirements: Completion of master's degree from NAACLS accredited program in Pathology. ASCP certification is required within 6 months of hire date. Job Summary: Under general direction, assists the pathologists in preparing and grossing anatomical specimens for routine histology testing and staining. Job Responsibilities and Requirements: PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Assigns priorities and batches of the specimens. Trims, labels, processes and preserves specimens. Provides gross dictation of surgical tissue specimens under direct supervision of surgical pathologist. Reviews gross dictation and slides prior to giving slides to the pathologist. Disposes of surgical tissue when appropriate. Prepares and maintains surgical tissues by properly registering accessioning, labeling and ensuring adequate fixation. Prepares frozen sections by labeling, cutting, staining and preserving the specimens. Photographs specimens as needed. Assists the Radiologist and Pathologist in collection of fine needle aspirate specimens. Assures that working supplies are adequate. Files, rotates and transfers surgical slides and paraffin blocks. May perform administrative and clerical duties as needed. Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on courses in anatomy and physiology or equivalent years of experience and education EXPERIENCE No experience required PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements. Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors. Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc. Frequent keyboard use/data entry. Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping. Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs. Rare climbing.
