Description

Passenger Car Electricians perform the inspection, repair and maintenance of the electrical components on passenger cars.

Accountabilities

  • Perform, with use of blueprints, schematics and location circuit plans, scheduled electrical inspections of various components and inspection and test of circuitry in accordance with company and industry standards
  • Read generator schematics and read HVAC schematics and diagnose and diagnose problems
  • Install industrial electric wiring including controls and instrumentation
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle conflict situations
  • Plan and coordinate work activities, determine equipment needs, and develop sequences of steps to get work completed
  • Ensure that all signals, lights and other safety appliances used by employees for protection are properly displayed and used
  • Communicate with others, verbally and in writing, technical information, job procedure recommendations, and other work-related information
  • Read, interpret and understand written or electronic information, maintain the information, and compile reports
  • Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures
  • Work with shop machines and tools and assist other employees as needed
  • Perform maintenance and repair of electrical components in passenger cars or electrical compartments and perform maintenance for miscellaneous equipment using blueprints, schematics, and location circuit plans
  • Diagnose electrical malfunctions in passenger cars, control circuits and components, assess the nature of problems, and identify corrective action needed
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC equipment


Qualifications - Required

  • All applicants must have reached the age of 18 or above
  • Basic keyboarding skills
  • Education or work experience in electronics, control systems, AC/DC motors OR current journeyman's electrical card
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)
  • Able to read electrical schematics and prints

Qualifications - Preferred

Physical and Mental Job Requirements

  • Lift, carry, or otherwise move weights up to 70 pounds occasionally.
  • Frequently perform physically demanding tasks, including occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Capable of occasionally performing overhead tasks for brief durations.
  • Perform tasks at heights of 20 feet or more
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Capable of remaining in a standing or sitting position for more than half of the workday, with opportunities to periodically change positions for comfort.
  • Capable of safely walking, climbing, and maintaining balance on uneven terrain, ballast, and rooftops as required.


Work Conditions

  • Work may be scheduled across different times, and can include on-call duties, overtime, shifts, weekends, and holidays when required.
  • Prepared to work outdoors in any weather.
  • Comfortable wearing personal protective gear for most of the day
  • Prepared to work in settings that involve large equipment such as railcars, locomotives, and cranes.
  • Follow safety protocols and practices.
  • Proficient in English to effectively communicate with colleagues and supervisors.
