Full Job Description
The Role

The Corporate Controller will report to the Chief Operating Officer and own the firm's financial operating system across corporate accounting, treasury, firmwide consolidation, planning, reporting, and financial systems. This leader will ensure a16z operates with accurate financial data, disciplined financial processes, scalable systems, and clear visibility into performance across the management company and related entities.

This role will lead corporate accounting operations, payroll, accounts payable, expense accounting, treasury and cash management, firmwide financial consolidation, budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting. The Corporate Controller will partner closely with Fund Finance, Tax, HR, Legal, IT, vertical leadership, and firm leadership to ensure financial information is accurate, timely, actionable, and built on repeatable processes.

The successful candidate will be a strong accounting operator with experience leading finance teams in a complex investment management, asset management, private equity, venture capital, or similarly multi-entity environment. While technical accounting expertise is helpful, this role is primarily focused on operational excellence, financial discipline, systems architecture, process modernization, and team leadership.

Given a16z's scale, global operations, multinational entity structure, and continued growth, this leader will build and continuously improve the infrastructure required to support the firm's next stage. This includes owning the Workday financial roadmap, improving expense and accounting automation, strengthening financial data architecture, and modernizing the team's approach to reduce manual work, improve accuracy, and increase the speed and quality of financial reporting.

Core systems used by a16z: Workday, Navan, Planful.

This role requires an in-office presence 2-3 days a week in our Menlo Park, CA or San Francisco, CA office.

    • Lead corporate accounting, treasury, cash management, firmwide consolidation, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, expense accounting, and financial systems
    • Ensure financial data is accurate, timely, controlled, and decision-useful
    • Establish operating rhythms across close, forecast, budget, cash, and reporting cycles
  • Lead corporate accounting operations
    • Oversee management company accounting, including GL, AP, payroll, expenses, accruals, allocations, intercompany activity, and entity reporting
    • Drive monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
    • Maintain accounting policies, procedures, documentation, and controls
  • Manage treasury and cash visibility
    • Own treasury operations, liquidity visibility, and cash reporting across corporate entities
    • Partner with Fund Finance, Tax, Legal, and banks on cash movement, entity funding, borrowing, and financing workflows
    • Build scalable cash forecasting, payment control, and reporting processes
  • Own firmwide consolidation, planning, and reporting
    • Lead consolidation across verticals, central teams, and corporate entities
    • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, multi-year planning, and management reporting
    • Report on P&L, cash flow, expenses, headcount, margins, and key operating drivers
  • Strengthen expense accounting and allocation discipline
    • Ensure accurate expense coding, approvals, accruals, allocations, and reporting
    • Partner with Fund Finance and Tax on classification across management company, funds, and related entities
    • Improve visibility into spend, ownership, and budget accountability
  • Own financial systems architecture
    • Lead the Workday financial roadmap, including chart of accounts, entity structure, cost centers, spend categories, and reporting dimensions
    • Partner with HR, Tax, Fund Finance, IT, and business stakeholders to improve system accuracy, usability, and scale
    • Ensure Workday, Navan, Planful, and related systems produce reliable financial data
  • Drive automation and AI-enabled modernization
    • Implement automation across accounting operations, expenses, reporting, reconciliations, and financial data management
    • Apply AI tools to reduce manual work, improve accuracy, accelerate reporting, and strengthen controls
    • Build a culture of continuous improvement with appropriate financial rigor
  • Partner cross-functionally with clear ownership
    • Work with Fund Finance, Tax, HR, Legal, IT, vertical leaders, central teams, and firm leadership to support business needs
    • Provide financial insight, risk identification, and decision support grounded in accurate data

Minimum Qualifications
  • CPA required
  • 12+ years of experience leading accounting, treasury, financial operations, and/or corporate finance functions within investment management, private equity, venture capital, asset management, or similarly complex multi-entity organizations
  • Experience leading finance organizations through operational scale, entity complexity, global expansion, and systems modernization
  • Strong operating experience across corporate accounting, treasury, cash management, expense operations, financial systems, and management reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop senior finance, accounting, and systems leaders
  • Experience partnering with Tax, Fund Finance, HR, Legal, IT, and business leaders in a complex operating environment
  • Deep revenue recognition, public-company reporting, or audited management company experience is helpful but not required

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $347,000 - $405,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
