POSITION TITLE: Assistant Principal

LOCATION: Brooke High School
QUALIFICATIONS: A valid West Virginia Principal Certification PK-AD, as established by the West Virginia Department of Education.
JOB GOAL: To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills to effectively carry out assigned duties that assist the principal in promoting the educational development of each student within the school.
  • Successful administrative experience with some in alternative setting.


  • Ability to write clearly and concisely with correct grammar and/or spelling


  • Ability to manage effectively a program of student behavior at high school


  • Knowledge/experience in preparing a secondary school schedule


  • Understanding the curriculum development process and alternative education methods, strategies and best practices


  • Ability to review current trends and research and apply to learning setting


  • Knowledge/experience observing and reviewing with teachers their performance in instruction and classroom management


  • Knowledge/experience assessing the needs of a school, evaluating the effectiveness of school practices, developing school improvement plans, setting goals, and establishing policies to manage day-to-day decisions

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist the Principal in overall administration


  1. Assist in development of strategic plan in compliance with West Virginia Board of Education Policies


  1. Assist the Principal in developing curriculum and planning course of study for alternative education best practice


  1. Coordinate and implement the master teaching schedule and any special assignments that may be needed


  1. Assist school committees/organizations. This includes, but is not limited to, School Curriculum Team, Faculty Senate, Local School Improvement Council, Parent/Teacher Association


  1. Evaluation and counseling staff members regarding their individual and group performances


  1. Attend special events held to recognize student achievement and attend school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events as directed by the Principal


  1. Supervise student traffic throughout the building and on the school grounds


  1. Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the student body and deal with special cases as necessary


  1. Supervise the reporting and monitoring of student attendance; work with the Attendance Director for investigative follow-up action


  1. Conduct safety inspections and safety fire drill activities


12. Ability to maintain and enhance the family/school relationship to encourage family participation in the school
13. Will be responsible to administer school and county policies as directed in a manner consistent with procedures followed by the other high school Assistant Principals
14. Aid parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives
15. Perform such record keeping functions as the Principal/Superintendent/Deputy Superintendent or designee may direct

16. Work with department heads and school staff to improve the climate, culture and instructional programs

17. Responsible for coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services as directed by the Principal/Superintendent/Deputy Superintendent or designee

18. Maintain effective working relationship with Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, and Principal

19. Provide instructional leadership and support within the school building

20. Create a climate conducive to teaching and learning

21. Implement a system to monitor student progress; includes attendance at Student Assistant Team Meetings (SAT) and Individual Education Plans (IEP)

22. Establish good public and employee relations

23. Evaluate personnel under his/her supervision

24. Maintain professional work habits

25. Maintain and upgrade his/her professional skills

26. Maintain high standard of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according to due process of rights of students

27. Assist with school fiscal responsibilities

28. Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, Principal, or appointed designee

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days. Salary based on Brooke County Teacher Salary Schedule and supplemental Principals' index.
EVALUATION: By immediate supervisor, using Brooke County Board of Education's Policy of Evaluation of Professional Employees

Salary based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule plus competitive benefits
package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.
