Position Summary

The Lead Psychiatrist serves as the physician leader for assigned psychiatric services while maintaining a clinical caseload. This role provides clinical oversight, consultation, and mentorship to Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants while partnering with site and medical leadership to advance quality, safety, access, and clinical excellence.

Working closely with the Chief Medical Officer, Site Administrator, Clinical Director, Lead Nurse, and Primary Care Providers, the Lead Psychiatrist helps shape the delivery of evidence-based, recovery-oriented behavioral healthcare services across the region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and medication management services.
  • Serve as the clinical leader for assigned psychiatric services and provider teams.
  • Provide consultation, mentorship, and medical oversight to Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants.
  • Support quality improvement, patient safety, peer review, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor provider productivity, documentation quality, access-to-care metrics, and service delivery outcomes.
  • Review prescribing practices and promote evidence-based psychiatric care.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for complex diagnostic, treatment, and psychiatric emergency situations.
  • Participate in site leadership activities and interdisciplinary care planning.
  • Support provider onboarding, training, and professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with AHCCCS, Medicare, Medicaid, DEA, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule.


Qualifications

Required
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry (ABPN) preferred.
  • Current Arizona medical license or ability to obtain licensure.
  • Current DEA registration.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of post-residency psychiatric practice experience.
  • Experience treating adults with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and complex behavioral health conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical leadership, consultation, and mentorship to multidisciplinary teams.


Preferred
  • Previous Lead Psychiatrist, Medical Director, Chief Resident, supervisory, or physician leadership experience.
  • Experience in community behavioral health, integrated care, or Medicaid-funded healthcare settings.
  • Knowledge of AHCCCS regulations, integrated care models, and value-based healthcare initiatives.
  • Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams serving high-acuity populations.
