Operating Room Technician - RWJBarnabas Health

A typical day for an Operating Room Technician may include:
  • Preparing operating rooms for surgical procedures by ensuring instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies are available, organized, and functioning properly
  • Assisting surgeons, registered nurses, and other members of the surgical team by providing skilled scrub support throughout a variety of surgical procedures
  • Anticipating the needs of the surgical team and responding efficiently to maintain a smooth, safe, and effective operative environment
  • Maintaining sterile technique and adhering to infection prevention, aseptic practices, and organizational policies throughout every procedure
  • Handling, organizing, and passing surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Assisting with direct patient care activities before, during, and after surgery while supporting patient safety, comfort, and dignity
  • Supporting the maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of surgical instruments and operating room equipment between procedures
  • Collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and other perioperative team members to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care
  • Participating in quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and ongoing professional development to support clinical excellence and continuous learning
  • Practicing within the legal and professional scope of the Operating Room Technician role while maintaining compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards
