Job Title: Operations Manager/General Manager
Classification: Exempt
Pay Range: $95,000 to $110,000 plus bonus
Location: Monterey, CA
Reports To: COO

Position Summary:
The Operations Manager is responsible for providing day-to-day operational leadership, ensuring efficient processes, effective resource allocation, high standards of safety and quality and excellent customer service. The Operations Manager has Profit and Loss (P&L) responsibilities for the specific business unit and is accountable for the overall performance of the operation working in close concert with the Sales Manager. This role involves supervising and developing staff, managing inventory systems and workflows, coordinating fleet and property maintenance, and driving continuous improvement across all operational functions. The ideal candidate is highly organized, a skilled problem-solver, and adept at managing complex operations in the lumber and building materials industry.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide operational leadership by supervising employees involved in dispatching, driving, warehousing, order filling, load building, delivery, and housekeeping.
  • Utilizes various Bistrack dashboards to track operational KPIs and ensure Hayward processes are being consistently followed.
  • Develop staff performance through training, coaching, scheduling, and handling disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Coordinate staffing needs, approve time off, and create/maintain schedules for all yard and retail personnel.
  • Define work processes, schedules, and workflows to ensure maximum efficiency across operations.
  • Build and maintain a strong team environment by working collaboratively with sellers, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain a 30-60-90-day operational plan, updating it weekly to reflect changing priorities.
  • Coordinate the use of materials handling equipment such as forklifts, saws, and trucks to optimize operations.
  • Supervise and schedule fleet and vehicle maintenance, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Administer location maintenance and repair programs for buildings, property, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the inventory control system (BisTrack) to utilize its capabilities, reporting functions, and documentation effectively (training provided).
  • Learn and maintain knowledge of inventory products, including Simpson, Feeney, composite decking, and engineered wood products (EWP).
  • Oversee inventory cycle counts (ICC), purchasing activities, and down stock reports to ensure accuracy and availability.
  • Process special orders, purchase orders (POs), and manage price records using the price matrix.
  • Manage retail store operations, including processing transactions on the cash register, balancing cash at the end of the day, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure all customer orders, including special orders, are assembled accurately and shipped in a timely manner.
  • Interpret and uphold all company policies and procedures, including OSHA, health standards, and safety regulations.
  • Enforce safety protocols, provide safety training, and promote a culture of workplace safety.
  • Coordinate loss control activities, including fire, theft, and fleet safety programs.
  • Monitor time and production records, making data-driven suggestions to improve team efficiency.
  • Suggest changes to working conditions or equipment usage to increase productivity and employee satisfaction.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to streamline operations.

Total employees supervised anywhere from 1 to 25 employees. Branch management staffing needs may require overseeing store employees and sales reps.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in operations or logistics management, preferably in the lumber or building materials industry.
  • Supervisory experience with multi-functional teams.
  • Proficient in computerized inventory control systems such as BisTrack (or similar ERP systems).
  • Familiarity with inventory management, purchasing processes, and price matrix tools.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience with P&L Management
  • Experience operating equipment such as forklifts and flat-bed trucks (certification preferred).
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to manage and motivate teams effectively.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven ability to implement operational improvements and drive results.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant health and safety standards.
