Full Job Description
Operating Engineer - $41.18 per hour first 90 days, $42.90 per hour after 90 days. Wage provisions and conditions are part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between Local 70 and the Saint Paul Arena Company.

Position Summary: The Operating Engineer is responsible for operating, maintenance and repair of HVAC units, plumbing systems, boiler systems, refrigeration systems, building automation systems, fire alarm and suppression systems, and all general mechanical equipment at facilities operated by the Saint Paul Arena Company, which include Grand Casino Arena, Saint Paul RiverCentre, Roy Wilkins Auditorium, 317 on Rice Park, RiverCentre Parking Ramp, and TRIA Rink.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
  • Monitor the operation of all facility systems:
    • Operate, adjust and monitor Building Automation Systems to maintain proper building conditions.
    • Operate facility heating and cooling systems including heat exchangers, pumps, boilers, condenser units and related equipment.
    • Monitor the operation of an ammonia industrial refrigeration system.
    • Monitor and respond to fire detection and suppression system conditions.
    • Respond to elevator or escalator issues.
    • Troubleshoot and repair issues related to building systems, including, but not limited to, air handling units, boilers, chillers, pumps, air compressors, and refrigeration systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on facility equipment.
    • Perform prescribed preventative maintenance on all mechanical equipment in the facilities, HVAC, Air Compressors, and Automation Systems.
    • Perform minor or emergency repairs on plumbing fixtures, pipes, water heaters and valves.
    • Maintain maintenance records for insurance and regulatory documentation.
    • Provide recommendations on equipment repair and/or replacement.
    • Assist in general repair of facility furniture, fixtures and equipment.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding building systems and maintenance.
    • Assist in the coordination of outside contractors for specialized services, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.
  • Respond promptly to work orders and maintenance requests, ensuring timely completion of tasks and minimal disruption to building and event operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Formal Education & Certification:
  • Five years of experience as an operating engineer (preferred).
  • Engineer MN Boiler License - Class C required.
  • Education in the maintenance and operation of industrial refrigeration systems.
  • Membership in I.U.O.E. Local 70 or willing to become a member within 30 days of hire.


Knowledge & Experience:
  • Knowledge of safety rules and in safe working procedures.
  • Knowledge of typical engineering equipment including but not limited to motors, fire alarm systems, signal systems, pump equipment, compressors, DDC controls, variable frequency drives, HVAC systems, etc.
  • Knowledge of welding, brazing, soldering and other repair techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of general computer software and use of Building Automation Systems (Metasys, Niagara, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, including all HVAC components, plumbing, and fire safety systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex building systems.

Work Conditions:
  • Ability to work long hours as well as evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical requirements include sitting, walking, standing, bending, squatting, twisting, grasping, climbing stairs and ladders, working at heights above the floor.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Work outside as needed year-round.
  • Ability to work multiple shifts.
