SUMMARY OF DUTIESIn direct support of Ingenium's mandate to foster scientific and technological literacy throughout Canada, the Officer, Public Programs develops, manages, coordinates, and evaluates both science and technology related museum programs consisting of hands-on and engaging camps, birthday parties, and in-gallery demonstrations, managing an overall budget portfolio of $350,000. This includes hiring, managing, and supervising a team of Camp Counsellors to lead summer camp activities through the summer months and being responsible for managing the safety, security and well-being of all those involved in this program. The programs created by the Interpretation Officer inspire young minds, increase attendance, provide important streams of revenue for the museum, and provide value to new and repeat visitors.

The Officer, Public Programs is also responsible for coordinating and delivering training sessions to equip Guides and Camp Counsellors with accurate and pertinent knowledge so they can answer scientific and technological visitor inquiries, enhance visitors' experiences with gallery interpretation, and encourage visitors to participate in hands-on demonstrations and activities, ensuring that the Canada Science and Technology Museum remains a leader in visitor engagement.

EDUCATION

  • University degree or diploma in science, social sciences, museology, education, history, communications and/or an acceptable combination of education, training and expertise.


EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in the development, coordination and supervision of interpretive programs for museum clientele (1 year);
  • Interpretation experience in a museum, cultural institution or related field in tourism, recreation or education (2 years);
  • Experience in training development and delivery;
  • Experience in coordinating schedules and working with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Experience in the supervision of staff.


KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of scientific principles to ensure accurate program development in a museum or science center environment;
  • Knowledge of past and current science and technology research and emerging digital technologies, their uses and ways they can be incorporated into programming;
  • Knowledge of museology with an emphasis on interpretation techniques, learning theories, visitor audiences, training, and evaluation methods;
  • Knowledge of standards and guidelines relating to accessibility, inclusivity and diversity to ensure that programs are designed to meet the needs of these audiences and that staff are trained on how to cater to visitors of all types including clients with neurodevelopmental disorders and other special needs. Knowledge of the history of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and the challenges they face is an asset;
  • Knowledge of theories of supervision and management in order to make sound decisions, and anticipate upcoming team needs and requirements;
  • Knowledge of interview techniques to ensure high quality candidates are selected for key positions;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ingenium and the Canada Science and Technology Museum's mandate, structure, operational policies, procedures and objectives in order to initiate policies and operational procedures for birthday parties, summer camps, floor demonstrations and staff training;
  • Good understanding of risk management, crisis and emergency situation management to ensure that the safety and security of visitors are met;
  • Must have a good knowledge of laws and regulations when dealing with public safety, situations with children, staff injuries (WSIB), staff safety (WHIMS), etc.;
  • Must possess a good knowledge of the collective agreement and other related workplace policies used to guide decision making activities.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • The ability to think in non-traditional and novel ways about formal and informal science education in a museum setting is required to keep programs feeling new to ensure visitors and program participants continue to find value in their visit;
  • Ability to plan, develop, organize, direct, schedule, implement and evaluate a wide range of programs and activities, several of them closely interrelated and/or interdependent to effectively create and manage programs under this portfolio;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, manage timelines, respect budgets, handle multi-tasking, meet deadlines and adapt to conflicting and shifting priorities are essential in this position to coordinate and manage the multiple tasks and projects while being able to adjust to changing operational needs;
  • Ability to identify different audience types and target their needs to ensure that the museum's visitors are being properly catered to through museum programming and Guides' interactions with them;
  • Ability to demonstrate strong leadership, decision making and teamwork skills to lead and motivate a successful team (elicit collaboration from others, give and receive constructive criticism, overcome communication issues, develop partnerships with external groups, etc.);
  • Must possess the strong ability to evaluate challenging and difficult situations and take action effectively, and calmly when required while demonstrating good judgment;
  • Ability to test and adapt emerging technologies and digital concepts (robotics, coding) and use basic tools to effectively develop and maintain museum programs;
  • Ability to pay close attention to details like verification of facts, sources of reliability and accuracy when preparing training materials for front line staff;
  • Sound financial management skills (budgeting, cost analysis, forecasting, etc.) to effectively manage multiple budgets;
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure on concurrent projects to effectively develop, coordinate and maintain programming on time while juggling competing priorities;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external colleagues; to tailor documents to a wide variety of audiences and occasions and to deal with dissatisfied customers, difficult third-party contacts, and to effectively deliver program training;
