OverviewAs an Occupational Safety Officer (OSO) you will have at least four years of direct hands-on progressive industry experience in one or two of the following industries and have been involved in workplace health and safety in the following industries: Agriculture, Asbestos, Construction, Fishing & Marine, Forestry, Coastal Falling, Health Care, Health & Safety Program Management, Industrial Construction, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, Psychological Health & Safety, Trades and Utilities, Transportation & Warehousing, and Wood Products.
We have positions available in the following location with preference for industries listed below:
- Kelowna: Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Warehousing & Transportation
- Port Moody: Construction, Industrial Construction, Trades & Utilities
- Richmond: Manufacturing, Warehousing & Transportation, H&S Program Management and Fishing & Marine
- Terrace: Trades & Utilities, Construction, Industrial Construction, Oil & Gas, H&S Program Management
- Victoria: Fishing & Marine
How you'll make a difference: You'll help ensure B.C. workers go home safely at the end of their workday.
Where you'll work In this role, you'll work primarily in the field or community and remotely, based on the operational needs of the position. There may also be occasions when you are asked to come to the office, such as for training and orientation.

What you'll doAs an Occupational Safety Officer you will: Engage with workers and employers from various industries to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe through education, consultation, and enforcement. You'll make a positive, tangible difference by:
- Proactively inspecting workplaces to ensure that a safe work environment is being maintained and conveying the potential hazards, risks, and /or controls
- Mitigating potential health or safety hazards to workers, that workers and the employer have been apprised of their responsibilities, and that first aid services and equipment meet current criteria
- Writing orders to ensure compliance with the Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulation
- Consulting with and educating employers, workers, and others on occupational health and safety matters
- Partnering with industry to ensure the success of safety initiatives
- Consistently models the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.

Is this a good fit for you?We're looking for people who can: - Apply their knowledge of workplace industrial processes, equipment, and technology to make workplaces safer
- Use their interpersonal and communication skills to convey the potential hazards, risks, and/or controls and gain compliance on complex health and safety issues within various work environments
- Use their critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate unique workplace health and safety hazards and identify effective mitigations and controls
- Make and enforce timely decisions independently and objectively, using sound judgment and technical knowledge
- Handle high pressure, and sometimes tense situations and emergencies with a high level of professionalism
- Work variable hours, be available for emergency call out after hours or weekends, and be willing to travel throughout the province
Your background and experience - A minimum of 4 years relevant and progressive experience in one or two of the industries listed above where you've gained broad knowledge of the industry's processes, equipment, terminology, risks, and hazards. Roles held could include superintendent, health and safety representative, owner, foreman, tradesperson, equipment operator, health and safety coordinator, health and safety manager, or health & safety consultant and
- General knowledge of occupational health and safety as evidenced by education (e.g. OHS diploma), certification (e.g. CRSP/CSP), and/or experience in OH&S (e.g. Formal OH&S experience or active Joint Health Committee member) is a requirement
