Job Description

The Manager of Occupational Health and Safety is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing programs that support a safe, healthy and compliant work environment across the University. This position provides expert consultation and training, communicates and implements safety initiatives, and ensures compliance with applicable regulations and standards. The Manager works proactively to identify and assess hazards, determine and implement appropriate hazard controls, and foster a strong culture of safety across the University.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, or a related scientific discipline. Master's degree in a related discipline preferred.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent preferred, or willingness to obtain certification within three years of hire.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety and/or industrial hygiene, preferably in a complex organization or higher education setting.
  • Must establish principal residence within approximately 30 minutes driving distance from Syracuse University to support on-site responsibilities and emergency response.


Skills and Knowledge
  • Demonstrated experience in hazard assessment and occupational health and safety monitoring and equipment.
  • Strong understanding of OSHA, EPA, and state safety regulations and standards.
  • Strong public speaking skills and demonstrated experience in providing health and safety training.
  • Willingness to support off-hour training, assessments and health and safety response actions.
  • Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite and relevant applications.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse campus population.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a highly matrixed, decentralized and complex work environment.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in support of all areas of the EHSS Department.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • A valid NYS Driver 's license and a driving record which meets University requirements.
  • Must be medically fit and able to wear respiratory protection.
  • Current HAZWOPER certification preferred.
  • Able to lift up to 25 lbs


Responsibilities
  • Hazard Identification & Management: Conduct workplace inspections, hazard assessments and health and safety monitoring. Identify and implement appropriate hazard control measures, mitigation strategies and appropriate personal protective equipment. Respond to, investigate and address health and safety inquiries and concerns and communicate findings and resolutions. Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, prepare reports and recommend preventative measures. Identify and implement injury prevention strategies.
  • Program Development and Compliance: Develop, implement, and maintain occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and state regulations. Monitor compliance through audits, inspections, and risk assessments. Maintain accurate records and prepare required reports for regulatory agencies.
  • Training & Communication: Design and deliver occupational health and safety training programs, maintain training records and monitor training compliance. Provide consultation and guidance to assure and promote health and safety awareness and compliance across the University. Prepare health and safety guidance documents, website content and other communications.
  • Leadership and Collaboration: Advise University leadership on safety performance, concerns and risk mitigation strategies. Collaborate with EHS staff and safety professionals in other departments. Engage frequently with faculty, staff and students research, facility and shop and studio environments. Supervises and mentors junior EHS staff and interns.
  • Emergency Response: Participates in chemical, biological or environmental incident investigations and spill response actions including the continued ability to use chemical protective suits, respirators, specialized equipment and air monitoring devices.
