Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant - Cardiology (Inpatient/Outpatient)

Location: East Jefferson General Hospital, Metairie, LA
Schedule: Full-Time
Call: Required (Nights and Weekends)

Position Summary

East Jefferson General Hospital is seeking a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our dynamic cardiovascular team. This role provides comprehensive care across both inpatient and outpatient settings, working collaboratively with cardiologists and multidisciplinary care teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will perform medical evaluations, develop and implement treatment plans, assist with procedures, and contribute to the overall continuum of cardiac care. This position requires clinical expertise, strong communication skills, and flexibility to participate in night and weekend call coverage.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
  • Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform detailed physical examinations.
  • Evaluate and manage patient complaints, including interpretation of laboratory results, diagnostic imaging, and cardiac testing.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in accordance with established clinical guidelines and collaborating physician direction.
  • Order and perform diagnostic tests and procedures within scope of practice and as delegated by supervising or collaborating physicians.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans based on response to therapy.
  • Provide patient education, counseling, and preventative care guidance.
  • Document findings and communicate effectively with referring providers and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Coordinate referrals to specialty services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and subspecialty care.
  • Assist with preoperative evaluations, including histories and physicals, patient assessments, and risk stratification.
  • Prepare and support completion of surgical and procedural consent documentation.

Procedural & Inpatient Support
  • Assist cardiologists with procedures and interventions as needed.
  • Perform clinical procedures within scope of practice, including wound care, suturing, and post-procedure management.
  • Participate in inpatient consults and ongoing patient management.
  • Contribute to continuity of care across inpatient and outpatient settings.


Collaboration & Consultation
  • Assist nursing and clinic staff with telephone triage and follow-up care coordination.
  • Collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary care teams to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and role model to nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in committees, task forces, and initiatives aimed at improving patient care and operational efficiency.

Research & Quality Improvement
  • Participate in IRB-approved research activities, including data collection, chart reviews, and patient interviews.
  • Stay current with cardiology advancements and integrate evidence-based practices into patient care.
  • Contribute to evaluating clinical programs and their impact on patient outcomes.

Required Qualifications
Education

For Physician Assistants
  • Master's Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program (MS-PAS)

For Nurse Practitioners
  • Master's or Doctoral Degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Graduate of an accredited Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP), Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), or related advanced practice nursing program

Licensure & Certifications

Physician Assistant
  • Current Physician Assistant license through the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners
  • NCCPA Certification (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants)

Nurse Practitioner
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensure in Louisiana
  • Current national certification as a Nurse Practitioner through ANCC, AANP, AACN, or other approved certifying body
  • Prescriptive authority and DEA registration, or eligibility to obtain


Required for All Candidates
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred or obtained within established organizational timeframes
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in cardiology, cardiovascular services, acute care, hospital medicine, or internal medicine
  • Experience managing patients with complex cardiovascular conditions
  • Familiarity with cardiac testing, interpretation of diagnostic studies, and chronic disease management
  • Experience working in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings
