Job Purpose

Responsible for managing the clinical, operational, and financial activities within the department. Works collaboratively with physicians, clinical departments, nursing, management, and other stakeholders to ensure timely patient access to care, operational efficiency, department productivity, fiscal integrity, and patient satisfaction. Primary responsibilities include human resources management, practice business development, daily operational efficiency, effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.

In addition, the Nurse Manager provides leadership for outpatient and inpatient wound care services, ensuring evidence-based wound management practices, optimal clinical outcomes, interdisciplinary collaboration, and program growth.

Job Function 1: Overall Functioning of Unit

Provides oversight and operational support for the coordination and delivery of high-quality patient care 24/7. Leads and facilitates efficient patient flow processes, including admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring seamless transitions and optimal resource utilization. Conducts rounds to foster team engagement, uphold safety standards, and enhance the overall patient and family experience. Ensures appropriate staffing levels to meet patient acuity and volume, managing overtime and aligning staffing with budgetary and productivity targets.

For wound care services, oversees outpatient wound clinic operations and inpatient wound care consult services. Ensures evidence-based wound care practices are implemented consistently across care settings. Collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to support timely wound assessments, treatment planning, patient education, and care transitions. Monitors wound healing outcomes, pressure injury prevention initiatives, infection prevention practices, and overall program performance.

Job Function 2: Budget

Oversees the development, implementation, and management of annual operating, capital, and staffing budgets, ensuring efficient resource utilization and alignment with financial objectives. Actively contributes to strategic planning efforts to support organizational priorities.

Maintains oversight of specialty wound care supplies, equipment, advanced treatment modalities, and hyperbaric resources as applicable. Identifies opportunities to improve operational efficiencies, optimize reimbursement, and support service line growth.

Job Function 3: Performance Management

Leads the performance management process by conducting timely introductory and annual evaluations, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and individual development plans. Actively participates in strategic talent decisions, including recruitment and separation, while providing ongoing clinical and behavioral coaching to support staff excellence. Identifies and promotes professional development opportunities to foster continuous learning and career advancement. Applies progressive disciplinary practices consistently and equitably, addressing performance and conduct issues promptly with thorough documentation.

Supports specialty competency development related to wound care, pressure injury prevention, skin integrity management, and hyperbaric medicine. Ensures staff maintain required certifications, competencies, and continuing education requirements.

Job Function 5: Growth

Serves as an effective representative of the hospital and health system within the community, actively seeking opportunities to promote the organization.

Participates in wound care service line development, referral growth initiatives, community outreach, educational programs, and physician engagement activities that enhance visibility and access to specialized wound care services.

Job Function 6: Quality

Ensures the implementation of professional practice standards in alignment with organizational policies and evidence-based guidelines. Maintains compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, OSHA, The Joint Commission, and other relevant accrediting bodies. Oversees departmental performance and ensures adherence to patient safety initiatives and regulatory requirements.

Leads quality improvement initiatives focused on wound healing outcomes, pressure injury prevention, infection prevention, documentation standards, regulatory compliance, and patient safety. Reviews quality indicators and develops action plans to achieve program goals and benchmark performance metrics.

Job Function 6: Physicians

Fosters and sustains positive, collaborative relationships with physicians. Works in partnership with physicians at the department and hospital level to align and achieve clinical, operational, and organizational goals.

Collaborates closely with wound care physicians, surgeons, hospitalists, advanced practice providers, rehabilitation specialists, and other clinical partners to promote coordinated patient care and achieve desired clinical outcomes.

Job Function 7: Professional Practice

Promotes shared decision-making and professional autonomy through active participation in a professional governance structure. Maintains engagement with relevant professional organizations. Leads recruitment, retention, and team engagement efforts, fostering a collaborative and supportive departmental culture. Supports the organization's Magnet journey by advancing nursing excellence and staff empowerment. Facilitates daily huddles to enhance communication and reinforce a culture of safety.

Promotes evidence-based wound care practices, participation in specialty professional organizations, certification attainment, and ongoing professional development within the wound care specialty.

Qualifications

Qualifications
  1. Active Registered Nurse License.
  2. Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  3. Master's degree in Business, Healthcare, Finance, or Nursing preferred.
  4. BLS Required; ACLS preferred (dependent upon area of specialty).
  5. Specialty Nursing Certification preferred.
  6. Wound Care Certification (WCC, WOCN, CWON, CWCN, or equivalent) preferred.
  7. Demonstrated expertise in leadership, mentoring ability, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  8. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  9. Experience leading customer relations, finance and productivity management, continuous quality improvement, personnel staffing and development, and directing or leading departmental activities.
  10. Knowledge of wound management, pressure injury prevention, skin integrity programs, and hyperbaric medicine preferred.
  11. Previous leadership experience within wound care, ambulatory care, acute care, or specialty clinical programs preferred.
