Full Job Description
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to be recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from a wide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research across various fields. Individuals in this position will perform technical work supporting the collaboration's scientific research.

Research Title: Research Associate - Senior Researcher for Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Cybersecurity

The work will entail: The Senior Researcher for Applied AI in Cybersecurity is a senior technical expert responsible for the design, development, and deployment of trustworthy AI systems to secure industrial critical infrastructure. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research projects and manage the transition of these tools into operational industrial environments.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Technical Leadership: Lead the development and deployment of applied AI initiatives, specifically focusing on the technical integration of AI within cybersecurity for critical infrastructure and manufacturing.
  • Technical Analysis & Research: Execute complex technical analyses to build "trustworthy AI" frameworks, ensuring that AI deployments in cybersecurity are robust, explainable, and secure against adversarial attacks.
  • Technical Coordination: Coordinate technical AI inputs across NIST and integrate emerging AI technologies into operational processes to enhance cybersecurity capabilities.
  • Technology Transition: Manage the transition of co-developed laboratory research into scalable, functional solutions for U.S. industry partners and critical infrastructure stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizen Preferred
  • Experience in leading research and measurement science in artificial intelligence to solve key challenges in high-priority critical and emerging technology areas, such as cybersecurity for critical infrastructure.
  • Experience in executing guidelines, pilot implementations, and standards for key artificial intelligence topics.
  • Experience in transitioning key research to the U.S. industry to enable high-impact results.
  • Knowledge of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF)
