Position Description:

Our Underground Operations are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in underground ground support design and rock mechanics, rock mass data collection methods and property assessment, quality control and assurance systems, geotechnical instrumentation and should have practical experience working in underground mining operations. The ability to manage, develop and mentor junior staff is vital in this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all geotechnical aspects of the underground mine and associated projects, including technical guidance, operations monitoring, and adherence to Ground Control standards
  • Manage ground support QA/QC programs such as rock bolt pull-testing and shotcrete and backfill quality
  • Manage geotechnical monitoring systems and databases including instrumentation, data collection and monitoring, data analysis, and reporting
  • Develop and analyze numerical models to provide input and assessment of mine designs, plans, and sequences
  • Ensure adequate field mapping, core logging, and ground support auditing to identify and prescribe corrective measures for ground control issues
  • Investigate ground control issues and assist in development and administration of corrective actions
  • Review and advise on development, production, and construction designs and plans ensuring adherence to the Ground Control standards
  • Lead the development of engineering and planning standards and processes related to geomechanics and Ground Control Management
  • Serve as the primary interface for all geotechnical matters between technical services and operations teams
  • Engage and manage geotechnical consultants, contractors, and vendors as required
  • Ensure that good communication is maintained between the site's geotechnical engineers and other industry leaders in this field including mentoring and training of engineers
  • Liaison with regional and company geotechnical experts and other industry leaders to improve standards and procedures, conduct site audits, and support cross-training and development
  • Develop and administer ground control safety training programs and refreshers
  • Responsible for business improvement of mining efficiencies and reductions in operational mining costs
  • Performance of other duties as assigned


Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirement: B.S. Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering or Geology
  • Comprehensive experience in underground geotechnical engineering at an active mining operation required
  • Team oriented with strong leadership and mentoring skills required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to communicate effectively and clearly, in writing and verbally, with all levels of the organization required
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and health, and environment excellence along with technical best practices required
  • Ability to think strategically, demonstrate good judgment, strong organizational and planning skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with a range of stakeholders, including Technical Services and Operations required
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively with people from diverse cultures required
  • Practical experience in design of backfill and shotcrete systems and related delivery systems preferred
  • Mining software such as Deswik and Leapfrog preferred
