ResponsibilitiesPosition Summary
The Network Cabling Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, testing, and upgrade of structured cabling and network infrastructure supporting facilities and other secure operational environments. This position ensures network infrastructure is reliable, secure, compliant with applicable standards, and capable of supporting mission-critical operations.
This role works closely with customers, end users, project managers, engineers, network personnel, security personnel, and other technical teams to identify infrastructure requirements, resolve connectivity issues, support network deployments, and complete cabling projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance, repair, modification, and upgrade activities across multiple DOE network infrastructures to maintain network reliability, security, availability, and operational continuity.
- Install, route, dress, terminate, label, test, troubleshoot, and certify cabling systems in accordance with applicable industry standards, technical specifications, engineering requirements, and project documentation.
- Perform fiber optic cable installation and termination activities and support fusion splicing operations for new network deployments, infrastructure expansion, troubleshooting, repairs, and system modifications.
- Utilize appropriate test equipment to verify cable performance and identify faults.
- Diagnose and resolve network connectivity, cabling, pathway, termination, and infrastructure issues.
- Troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling systems to identify failures, signal degradation, improper terminations, damaged cables, and other physical-layer issues.
- Perform cable pulls, pathway installation, cable management, rack and cabinet installation, patch-panel termination, equipment labeling, and related infrastructure activities.
- Conduct quality-control inspections and document test results, cable certifications, as-built information, deficiencies, repairs, and completed work.
- Maintain compliance with security procedures, access-control requirements, safety requirements, site-specific protocols, and established work practices while operating in secure and sensitive environments.
- Follow applicable electrical, telecommunications, structured cabling, firestopping, grounding, bonding, and workplace safety requirements.
- Support project planning, scheduling, material coordination, site surveys, work sequencing, and execution to ensure assigned activities are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
- Assist with network infrastructure deployments, facility expansions, renovations, equipment moves, adds, changes, and decommissioning activities.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- 5 years relevant experience with BS/BA; 3 years with MS/MA; 0 years with PhD, 9 years with a HS Diploma
- Active Q/SCI
- Experience installing, terminating, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing structured cabling and network infrastructure.
- Hands-on experience with fiber optic, CAT6/CAT6A, and coaxial cabling systems.
- Experience with fiber optic fusion splicing or demonstrated ability to support fusion-splicing activities.
- Ability to read and interpret telecommunications drawings, cable schedules, floor plans, technical specifications, and installation requirements.
- Experience using cable certification testers, fiber optic test equipment, OTDRs, power meters, light sources, and other telecommunications test instruments.
- Strong communication and customer-service skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers, end users, management, contractors, and technical personnel.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary technical team.
- Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, meet project schedules, and respond effectively to changing operational requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience supporting Department of Energy, federal government, military, or other high-security facilities.
- Experience working in classified, controlled, or otherwise sensitive environments.
- Industry certifications such as BICSI, FOA/CFOT, CompTIA Network+, or manufacturer-specific fiber/cabling certifications.
- Experience supporting structured cabling projects from site survey and planning through installation, testing, certification, and closeout.
- Familiarity with telecommunications room design, rack layouts, patch panels, fiber distribution systems, cable trays, ladder racks, and pathway systems.
- Experience with project documentation, cable records, as-built drawings, test reports, and work packages.
Target Salary Range$80,000 - $128,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
