NERC Technical Manager

The NERC Technical Manager is responsible for overseeing technical compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standards, focused on Operations & Planning (O&P) standards. This role provides technical leadership, regulatory expertise, and cross‑functional coordination to ensure the organization’s power systems operations, planning, infrastructure, and processes meet all applicable reliability requirements.

NERC Compliance & Technical Oversight

  • Lead technical interpretation, implementation, and enhance NERC compliance programs (O&P, and applicable regional requirements).
  • Translate regulatory requirements into technical controls, system designs, procedures, and operating practices.
  • Ensure compliance of the Bulk Electric System supporting infrastructure.

Audit & Regulatory Support

  • Serve as technical lead for NERC and Regional Entity audits, spot checks, self‑certifications, and data requests.
  • Coordinate technical evidence collection, review accuracy, and address gaps or findings.
  • Develop and track mitigation plans, corrective action plans (CAPs), and compliance improvements.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide guidance and technical training to internal stakeholders on NERC standards and compliance expectations.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to leadership on regulatory risk, emerging standards, and industry best practices.
  • Support enterprise risk management and reliability initiatives as they relate to BES operations.

Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor and tracks new or revised NERC Standard development, enforcement trends, and industry advisories.
  • Recommend process enhancements, automation opportunities, and control improvements to strengthen compliance posture.
  • Participate in industry groups, working groups, and regional forums as appropriate.

What You Have

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline; alternatively 5+years of NERC Compliance experience.
  • Experience: Minimum 5+ years of regulatory compliance or proven experience supporting NERC audits and regulatory interactions.
  • Skills: Strong knowledge of NERC standards, engineering topics like relay testing, protection coordination, power system modeling, and substation equipment; analytical and detail oriented.
  • Able to meet requirements for nuclear plant background clearance and medium impact clearance, where applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Regional Entities (e.g., WECC, ERCOT, SERC, MRO, NPCC, RF, TRE).
  • Project Management certification (PMP) – a plus
  • Requires occasional travel for project support, audits, meetings, or industry events.
  • On‑call or after‑hours support may be required during compliance events or system incidents.
