Description:
General Summary:
Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Radiology and according to Radiologist's directions and established procedures, this position operates magnetic resonance imaging scanners to obtain images for use by physicians for the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies.

Positions patients for procedures, administers injections of contrast media, operates scanners to visualize pathologies, manipulates images to create optimal studies, distributes images to the PACS system, and may reproduce images as necessary.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate patient care across various age groups.

Receives, reviews, and evaluates physician orders and patient schedules for MRI exams.

May contact healthcare professionals to verify/clarify orders and discuss patient conditions or histories to obtain the highest quality images.

Greets patients and prepares them for MRI exams by ensuring proper patient identification, transporting patients, and assisting with dressing and undressing.

Demonstrates the ability to perform procedures across all levels of patient care.

Follows guidelines to properly identify patients and maintain patient safety.

Explains procedures to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation.

Interviews patients and/or family to obtain relevant medical history for MRI procedures.

Verifies patient allergies and renal function and screens for implanted medical devices that may interfere with patient safety or image quality.

Completes required documentation for each patient.

Screens female patients for possibility of pregnancy, ensures pregnancy testing is completed, and documents results appropriately.

Prepares the examination room by operating all equipment, including MRI scanners, computers, and PACS equipment, ensuring all equipment is in proper working order.

Assists patients onto and off of the MRI scanner using proper techniques.

Properly positions patients to obtain optimal MRI images.

Enters commands necessary to adjust transmitters and receivers, visualize, and manipulate screen images to obtain the best possible image.

May perform intravenous injections and administer contrast media for examinations following sterile techniques.

Observes patients during procedures and communicates to monitor safety and comfort.

Ensures images and documentation include correct information such as patient name and procedural code.

Reviews images to determine quality and the need for retakes.

Uses computer programs to track patient throughput and complete required documentation.

Participates in an image Quality Assurance Program by reviewing exams that receive QA remarks from Radiologists.

Maintains required files and records, prepares statistical reports, and ensures maintenance work orders are completed.

Keeps the work area clean and orderly and monitors inventory.

May perform a variety of clerical tasks and assist other team members in the department.

Keeps current regarding developments in MRI procedures and equipment through appropriate educational programs.

May be involved in supervision and demonstration of MRI methods to students or other personnel.

May transport materials between locations which requires operation of a vehicle.

May be required to provide 24/7 coverage while on duty or on call.
